...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MARQUETTE HAS ISSUED A FLOOD  
WARNING FOR THE FOLLOWING RIVERS IN UPPER MICHIGAN...  
 
STURGEON RIVER NEAR CHASSELL AFFECTING HOUGHTON COUNTY  
 
.A STEADY RISE HAS BEEN OBSERVED ON THE STURGEON RIVER NEAR CHASSELL  
OVER THE PAST FEW DAYS DUE TO SNOW MELT IN THE AREA. CURRENT LEVELS ARE RIGHT  
AT THE FLOOD STAGE OF 10.5 FEET, AND ABOUT A HALF INCH OF WATER IS ALREADY FLOWING  
OVER STURGEON RIVER ROAD. ALTHOUGH SNOWMELT SHOULD BE SLOW TODAY AND SATURDAY,  
TEMPERATURES WILL WARM RAPIDLY SUNDAY INTO NEXT WEEK. THERE IS STILL AMPLE  
SNOWPACK IN PARTS OF THE BASIN, ESPECIALLY ON NORTH ASPECTS AND IN HEAVILY  
WOODED AREAS.  
 
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...  
 
SAFETY MESSAGE...EVEN 6 INCHES OF FAST MOVING FLOOD WATER CAN KNOCK  
YOU OFF YOUR FEET...AND A DEPTH OF 2 FEET WILL FLOAT YOUR CAR. NEVER  
TRY TO WALK...SWIM...OR DRIVE THROUGH SUCH SWIFT WATER. IF YOU COME  
UPON FLOOD WATERS...STOP...TURN AROUND AND GO ANOTHER WAY.

* FLOOD STAGE IS 10.5 FEET.  
* AT 10.5 FEET...THE RIVER BEGINS TO OVERFLOW ONTO STURGEON RIVER  
ROAD...RAJALA ROAD...AND AHO ROAD.
