...NWS PRELIMINARY TORNADO DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 6/28/18 CARTER  
COUNTY MONTANA INTO CAMP CROOK/HARDING COUNTY SOUTH DAKOTA...  
 
DURING THE EVENING OF JUNE 28, 2018, A STORM PRODUCED SEVERAL  
TORNADOES ACROSS CARTER COUNTY, MONTANA INTO HARDING COUNTY,  
SOUTH DAKOTA. INFORMATION IS STILL BEING COMPILED AND IT WILL  
TAKE SEVERAL DAYS TO FINALIZE.  
 
PRELIMINARY INFORMATION INDICATES THAT THE TORNADIC STORM FIRST  
PRODUCED A TORNADO IN CENTRAL CARTER COUNTY MONTANA BETWEEN  
RIDGEWAY AND ALBION. THE TORNADOES WENT THROUGH CYCLES OF  
DISSIPATING AND REDEVELOPING AS THE PARENT STORM DRIFTED  
NORTHEAST TOWARD CAPITOL, MT BEFORE MOVING INTO SOUTH DAKOTA.  
 
THE TORNADOES STAYED MOSTLY OVER RURAL AREAS PRODUCING LIMITED  
DAMAGE. THE DAMAGE THAT HAS BEEN SURVEYED HAS RANGED FROM EF-0 TO  
EF-3. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE APPEARS TO HAVE OCCURRED WITH A  
TORNADO THAT TOUCHED DOWN SOUTH OF CAPITOL AND MOVED INTO SOUTH  
DAKOTA. DAMAGE OBSERVED IN SOUTH DAKOTA SO FAR IS CONSISTENT WITH  
AN EF-3 TORNADO RATING, WITH WINDS ESTIMATED AT 136 MPH.  
 
THE ENHANCED FUJITA (EF) SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO THE  
FOLLOWING CATEGORIES.  
 
EF-0...WEAK......65 TO 85 MPH  
EF-1...WEAK......86 TO 110 MPH  
EF-2...STRONG....111 TO 135 MPH  
EF-3...STRONG....136 TO 165 MPH  
EF-4...VIOLENT...166 TO 200 MPH  
EF-5...VIOLENT...>200 MPH
