SPECIAL STORM SUMMARY MESSAGE FOR NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR ISSUED BY  
ENVIRONMENT CANADA AT 5:15 AM NST THURSDAY 31 MARCH 2005.  
 
A MOISTURE-LADEN STORM SYSTEM SITUATED WELL SOUTH OF NEWFOUNDLAND HAS  
BROUGHT HEAVY AMOUNTS OF SNOW AND RAIN TO THE ISLAND. SNOW AND RAIN  
BEGAN OVER SOUTHWESTERN NEWFOUNDLAND TUESDAY MORNING MARCH 29.  
BY WEDNESDAY MORNING HEAVY PRECIPITATION HAD SPREAD ACROSS THE ENTIRE  
ISLAND. MOST OF THE REGION RECEIVED SNOW FROM THIS SYSTEM WHILE VERY  
HEAVY RAINS WERE EXPERIENCED ALONG THE IMMEDIATE SOUTHERN COASTLINE  
INCLUDING THE BURIN PENINSULA AND MOST OF THE AVALON PENINSULA.  
STRONG EAST TO NORTHEAST WINDS ALSO ACCOMPANIED THIS STORM.  
PRECIPITATION WAS STILL FALLING AS OF EARLY THURSDAY MORNING  
MARCH 31.  
 
THE GREATEST AMOUNTS OF RAINFALL WERE REPORTED OVER THE BURIN  
PENINSULA WITH 153 MILLIMETRES AT SALT POND AS OF 8 PM WEDNESDAY WITH  
MORE RAIN FALLING SINCE THEN. HEAVIEST SNOWFALLS OCCURRED OVER  
CENTRAL AND NORTHEASTERN NEWFOUNDLAND WITH 68 CENTIMETRES AT DEER  
LAKE AND 62 CENTIMETRES AT GANDER AS OF 4:30 AM THURSDAY.  
HIGHEST WINDS WERE EXPERIENCED AT BURGEO AT 3:30 AM THURSDAY WITH A  
PEAK GUST OF 73 KNOTS (135 KM/H) FROM THE NORTHEAST.  
WRECKHOUSE WINDS LATE ON TUESDAY MARCH 29 PEAKED AT 67 KNOTS (124  
KM/H). THE FOLLOWING ARE SOME PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS AND MAXIMUM WIND  
GUST REPORTS AS OF 2:30 AM NST THURSDAY MARCH 31 UNLESS OTHERWISE  
STATED.
