LOCATION: KOYUKUK RIVER AT HUSLIA

PRODUCT TYPE: WATCH

EXPIRATION TIME: 800 AM AKDT MON JUN 3 2019

PRIMARY CAUSE: LAKE LEVEL RISE

REASON FOR WARNING/ADVISORY:

MINGOGUT LAKE JUST NORTHWEST OF HUSLIA VILLAGE HAS RISEN
ABOUT 1-FOOT (VERTICAL) SINCE WEDNESDAY MAY 29 AND IS THREATENING TO FLOOD
SEVERAL HOMES LOCATED ALONG THE LAKE. LAKE LEVELS ARE EXPECTED TO RISE
ANOTHER ONE TO 1.5 FEET.

THE RISING LAKE LEVELS IN THE HUSLIA AREA ARE RELATED TO THE RISE OF THE
KOYUKUK RIVER, WHICH IS NOW RECEIVING THE SNOWMELT AND MINOR PRECIPITATION
FLOOD WAVE EXPERIENCED AT ALLAKAKET ON MAY 21. AS KOYUKUK RIVER WATER LEVELS
RISE IN THE HUSLIA AREA, WATER SEEPING FROM THE RIVER CHANNEL IS CAUSING THE
LOCAL WATER TABLE TO RISE SLOWLY. AS THE WATER TABLE RISES, LOCAL LAKE
LEVELS ALSO WILL RISE.

EXPECT FURTHER RISE IN THE WATER TABLE AS THE KOYUKUK RIVER WATER LEVELS
CONTINUES TO RISE. THE KOYUKUK RIVER AT HUSLIA IS EXPECTED TO CREST ON
SUNDAY JUN 2; HOWEVER, THE WATER TABLE WILL CONTINUE TO RISE FOR ANOTHER
DAY (MON JUN 3) AFTER THE KOYUKUK RIVER CRESTS DUE TO THE SLOW ATTENUATION OF
GROUNDWATER FLOW.

EXPECTED IMPACTS:
EIGHT HOMES ARE BEING THREATENED BY THE RISE OF MINGOGUT LAKE

COMMENTS:
LOTS OF UNCERTAINTY IN THE DEGREE OF GROUND AND SURFACE WATER INTERACTION AND
THE TOTAL RISE OF THE KOYUKUK RIVER AT HUSLIA.
