OVER SOUTHERN MANITOBA EMANATING FROM AN UPPER LOW OVER BAFFIN ISLAND
AND DAVIS STRAIT. A RIDGE WAS OVER THE EASTERN PACIFIC AND ALASKA.

ONTARIO AND A STRONG HIGH OVER THE MACKENZIE VALLEY.

DISCUSSION...

ALBERTA...
A SHORTWAVE MOVING IN FROM THE NT WILL TRACK THROUGH ALBERTA TODAY
AND TONIGHT, BRINGING A FEW CM OF SNOW TO MUCH OF THE PROVINCE.
BEHIND THIS SHORTWAVE, AN ARCTIC RIDGE WILL USHER IN SOME COLD AIR
FOR THE WEEKEND. A FEW EXTREME COLD WARNINGS ARE POSSIBLE BY SATURDAY
MORNING FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHERN AND EASTERN ALBERTA WHERE THE COLD
ARCTIC AIR WILL COMBINE WITH OUTFLOW OUT OF THE RIDGE TO GIVE
WINDCHILL VALUES NEAR -40.

NORTHERN SK...CLEAR AND COLD TODAY AND THOUGH THE WEEKEND AS AN
ARCTIC RIDGE MOVES INTO THE REGION. EXPECT SOME EXTREME COLD WARNINGS
TO BE ISSUED OVER THE COMING DAYS.

SOUTHERN MANITOBA...THE BLIZZARD STARTED ON SCHEDULE THIS MORNING,
WITH HUMAN OBS AND WEBCAMS SHOWING SOME AREAS OF PRETTY MUCH ZERO
VISIBILITY. WINDS PEAKED WITH GUSTS JUST OVER 100 KM/H WEST AND
SOUTHWEST OF WINNIPEG. ROAD CLOSURES, INCLUDING THE TRANS-CANADA,
YELLOWHEAD, HIGHWAY 75 AND THE PERIMETER ARE IN EFFECT AS OF THIS
WRITING. THE BLIZZARD WILL TAPER OFF LATER THIS AFTERNOON OR EARLY
THIS EVENING AS WINDS DIMINISH.

MUCH OF THE REMAINDER OF SOUTHERN MANITOBA WILL SEE POOR VISIBILITY
IN SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW TODAY, ALTHOUGH NOT AS BAD AS THE RED RIVER
VALLEY.

FAR NORTHERN MANITOBA...BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ARE OCCURRING IN
CHURCHILL TODAY WITH STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS AND FALLING TEMPERATURES.
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED SOUTH OF THE TREELINE, BUT
EXTREME COLD WARNINGS ARE IN EFFECT FOR BROCHET AND TADOULE LAKE.

SOUTHERN SASKATCHEWAN...VISIBILITIES HAVE MOSTLY IMPROVED AS WINDS
DIMINISH.

BAKER LAKE/ARVIAT...BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WILL CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE
DAY WITH VERY STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS AND BITTERLY COLD WIND CHILL
VALUES. THE BLIZZARD SHOULD END TONIGHT OR SATURDAY MORNING.

NT...LOW DEVELOPING IN THE BEAUFORT WILL BRING NEAR WARNING CRITERIA
TO SACHS HARBOUR AND PAULATUK SUNDAY. LITTLE TO NO SNOW EXPECTED TO
FALL WITH THESE WINDS MAKING A BLIZZARD MORE DIFFICULT. HIGHEST
CONFIDENCE IS IN PAULATUK FOR WIND WARNING AND MAY ISSUE A WATCH FOR
IT THIS AFTERNOON.

HIGH ARCTIC...EXTREME COLD WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR GJOA HAVEN.
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO IMPROVE BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND.
