DISCUSSION

ISSUED AT 237 PM CST SUN JAN 19 2025

ARCTIC AIRMASS REMAINS OVER THE NORTHLAND TODAY, WITH CURRENT
TEMPERATURES IN THE -5 TO -15F RANGE. ADD IN NORTHWESTERLY WINDS
AT 6 TO 12 MPH AND WIND CHILLS FALL AS LOW AS -30F. SURFACE HIGH
PRESSURE WILL REMAIN TO OUR WEST THROUGH TUESDAY WITH DEEP LAYER
NORTHWESTERLY TO NORTHERLY FLOW CONTINUING. A SHORTWAVE WILL
DROP SOUTHWARD OUT OF CENTRAL CANADA TOMORROW, BRINGING ANOTHER
PUSH OF COLD AIR WITH IT. EXPECT HIGH TEMPERATURES TOMORROW TO
BE A FEW DEGREES COLDER THAN TODAY, WITH TEMPERATURES MONDAY
NIGHT AS LOW AS -28F. THIS WILL ALLOW WIND CHILLS TO FALL INTO
THE -40 TO -50F RANGE. AN EXTREME COLD WARNINGS REMAINS IN
EFFECT UNTIL NOON TUESDAY.

WITH NORTHWESTERLY FLOW ACROSS WESTERN LAKE SUPERIOR, LAKE
EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS WILL REMAIN POSSIBLE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE
SOUTH SHORE THROUGH TUESDAY. ADDITIONAL SNOW AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 5
INCHES ARE POSSIBLE, MAINLY ACROSS NORTHERN BAYFIELD COUNTY.

AS THE SHORTWAVE AXIS PUSHES TO THE EAST TUESDAY MORNING, WILL
START TO SEE WARM ADVECTION ALOFT AS LOW LEVEL WINDS TURN TO THE
SOUTH AND WEST. TEMPERATURES RETURN TO NORMAL VALUES FOR MID
JANUARY. ANOTHER SHORTWAVE AND COLD FRONT WORK THROUGH THE AREA
TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY. THIS PRESENTS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR
ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE
NORTHLAND. ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE LIMITED TO 1-2INCHES AS
MOISTURE RETURN AHEAD OF THE SYSTEM IS LIMITED. ANOTHER
OPPORTUNITY FOR ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS ARRIVES
FRIDAY, AS A SHORTWAVE MOVES INTO THE UPPER MIDWEST. ALTHOUGH,
SNOW ACCUMULATIONS LOOK LIMITED TO JUST A COUPLE INCHES AT MOST.

AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z TUESDAY/

ISSUED AT 1142 PM CST SUN JAN 19 2025

MAINLY VFR CONDITIONS OVERNIGHT EXCEPT AT HIB WHERE SKIES WILL
FLUCTUATE BETWEEN SCATTERED AND BROKEN CLOUDS AROUND 1800 FT.
THERE MAY BE SOME ICE CRYSTALS AND SNOW FLURRIES AT TIMES AS
WELL. AREAS ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR WILL SEE
PERSISTENT LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS WHICH WILL PRODUCE MVFR
CEILINGS AND IFR VIS. AN INCOMING TROUGH DROPPING SOUTHWARD
TOMORROW AFTER 12Z INCREASES MVFR SKY COVER CHANCES WITHIN THIS
ARCTIC AIRMASS TO SQUEEZE OUT WHAT LITTLE AMOUNT OF SNOW CAN
OCCUR. LIGHT MVFR VIS SNOW HAS BEEN INTRODUCED INTO THE TAFS
OVER NORTHEAST MINNESOTA FOR THIS SITUATION. WHILE GUIDANCE
WANTS TO SCOUR OUT AND LIFT CEILINGS AROUND 22 TO 23Z MON, THERE
IS LITTLE CONFIDENCE IN THIS SOLUTION AT THIS POINT SO
PREVAILING MVFR CEILINGS LAST THROUGH THE END OF THE TAF PERIOD.
