SYNOPSIS
 
A QUICK HITTING RAIN SYSTEM WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT  
THE AREA THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. THE STRONGEST RAIN WILL BE  
FOCUSED ALONG THE HUMBOLDT AND DEL NORTE COAST. CONDITIONS WILL  
QUICKLY CALM AND BEGIN TO DRY BY TONIGHT.  
 

 
   
DISCUSSION
 
A FRONTAL SYSTEM MOVING ONSHORE OVERNIGHT, AND WILL  
CONTINUE TO PUSH EASTWARD ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA THIS MORNING.  
STRONG SOUTHERLY WINDS HAVE DEVELOPED ALONG THE NORTH COAST  
OVERNIGHT. THESE WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO PEAK BRIEFLY EARLY THIS  
MORNING, WITH GUSTS FROM 40 TO 50 MPH OVER THE COAST HEADLANDS  
AND EXPOSED RIDGES IN DEL NORTE AND HUMBOLDT COUNTIES...LOCALLY  
HIGHER OVER THE MORE PROMINENT RIDGES. AS OF 3 AM PST, RADAR  
REFLECTIVITY A BAND OF LIGHT TO MODERATE RAINFALL ALONG THE COAST.  
ISOLATED TO NUMEROUS SHOWERS ARE EXPECTED IN THE WAKE OF THE  
FRONT AFTER SUNRISE. SHALLOW INSTABILITY WILL ALLOW CONVECTIVE  
SHOWERS CAPABLE OF PRODUCE HEAVY RAIN RATES UP TO 0.40 IN/HR THIS  
MORNING. RAIN WILL BE STRONGLY FOCUSED ALONG THE NORTHERN HALF OF  
THE AREA, WITH 0.6 TO 1.5 INCHES MOST LIKELY ACROSS DEL NORTE  
COUNTY AND 0.2 TO 0.6 INCHES IN HUMBOLDT. LOCATIONS FURTHER INLAND  
AND SOUTH WILL MOST LIKELY SEE LESS THAN 0.25 INCHES. THE  
HEAVIEST PRECIPITATIONS IS EXPECTED TO OCCUR IN A 6 HOUR PERIOD  
RIGHT AFTER 5 AM THIS MORNING. SNOW LEVELS REMAINED OVER 5000 FEET  
THIS MORNING. SCOTT MOUNTAIN PASS ON HIGHWAY 3 WILL SEE SOME  
SNOW, UP TO 2 INCHES. THE FAST MOVING SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS EXPECTED  
TO EXIT EASTWARD LATE THIS AFTERNOON, WITH LINGERING LIGHT  
SHOWERS THROUGH THIS EVENING, MAINLY ACROSS THE NORTHERN FORECAST  
AREA.  
 
HIGH PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO BUILDS IN DOWNSTREAM OF THE UPPER  
LEVEL TROUGH TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY. THIS WILL PROMOTE CLEARING  
SKIES AND DRY CONDITIONS ACROSS THE AREA, WITH SURFACE OFFSHORE  
FLOW DEVELOPING. COLD AIR ADVECTION WILL ALLOW COLD TEMPERATURES  
TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY. LOW TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST TO BE  
GENERALLY IN THE MID 30'S FOR THE COASTAL AND INTERIOR VALLEYS,  
WHILE MID TO UPPER 20'S FOR THE VALLEYS IN TRINITY COUNTY.  
ALTHOUGH, FOR AREAS WHERE SKIES CLEAR OUT QUICKLY, AREAS OF  
VALLEY FOG ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY. /ZVS  
   
EXTENDED DISCUSSION
 
RIDGING LATE THE THE WEEK WILL GENERALLY  
BRING WARMER AND DRIER CONDITIONS WITH POSSIBLY EVEN A RAGGED AND  
SHALLOW MARINE LAYER ALONG THE COAST. A SHORTWAVE IN THE RIDGE  
WILL MOST LIKELY GENERATE SOME MODERATE RAIN THIS WEEKEND, BUT  
TIMING IS UNCERTAIN WITH RAIN POSSIBLE ANYWHERE FROM SATURDAY  
THROUGH NEXT MONDAY. RAIN WOULD MOST LIKELY BE SHALLOW AND FOCUSED

A FAST MOVING FRONT HAS ARRIVED THIS MORNING.  
MVFR OR IFR CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED AS THE FRONT PASSES. GUSTY WINDS  
AND THE LLWS THREAT AT THE COASTAL TERMINALS PERSIST AS THE FRONT  
PASSES. BOTH THE GUSTY WINDS AND LLWS WILL DIMINISH BY SUNRISE. POST-  
FRONTAL SHOWERS WILL BRING VARYING CONDITIONS AT ALL THE TERMINALS  
TODAY, WITH MAINLY IFR TO MVFR CONDITIONS EXPECTED IN THE MORNING,  
AND MVFR TO VFR CONDITIONS IN THE AFTERNOON. SHOWERS DIMINISH LATE

MARINE
 
A SYSTEM IS MOVING ACROSS THE AREA THIS MORNING, BRINGING  
NEAR-GALE TO GALE FORCE SOUTHERLY GUSTS NORTH OF CAPE MENDOCINO.  
THIS IS A QUICK MOVING SYSTEM, AND WINDS WILL SHARPLY DECLINE AND  
TURN WEST-NORTHWESTERLY AFTER THE FRONTAL PASSAGE. THE ASSOCIATED  
STEEP WIND WAVES WILL QUICKLY DECAY TODAY, BUT SEAS WILL REMAIN  
ELEVATED AS A LARGE MID-PERIOD WESTERLY SWELL OF 10-12 FT FILLS IN.  
NORTHERLY WINDS INCREASE TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY, PARTICULARLY SOUTH  
OF CAPE MENDOCINO. 20-30 KT GUSTS ARE POSSIBLE THURSDAY AFTERNOON  
SOUTH OF THE CAPE, WITH THE STRONGEST WINDS IN THE LEE OF THE CAPE.  
NORTH OF THE CAPE, WINDS WILL BE SLIGHTLY WEAKER (15-20KTS), WITH  
SEAS CHARACTERIZED MOSTLY BY DECAYING WESTERLY SWELLS. WINDS EASE  
FRIDAY, BUT ANOTHER LONG-PERIOD WESTERLY SWELL OF 10-12 FT IS  
FORECAST TO FILL IN, ELEVATING SEAS ONCE AGAIN. ANOTHER SYSTEM IS  
EXPECTED THIS WEEKEND, BRINGING GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS AND STEEP

FORECAST TO BUILD INTO THE WATERS FRIDAY. WITH LIGHT WINDS AND MILD  
WEATHER EXPECTED FRIDAY, BEACHGOERS SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS AS THIS SWELL  
PRESENTS A MODERATE SNEAKER WAVE THREAT. BE CAUTIOUS VISITING STEEP  
BEACHES AND JETTIES AND REMEMBER TO NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE
