AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EUREKA CA
247 PM PST WED FEB 19 2025

SYNOPSIS
REMAINING SHOWERS WILL DISSIPATE THIS EVENING WITH SKIES
GRADUALLY CLEARING OVERNIGHT. CALMER AND WARMER WEATHER IS EXPECTED
FOR THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS WITH LIGHT RAIN AGAIN FOCUSED ALONG THE
NORTH COAST THIS WEEKEND.

DISCUSSION
RAIN SHOWERS THIS MORNING HAVE QUICKLY DISSIPATED
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON WITH MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES VISIBLE JUST OFF
SHORE. ALL TOLD, RAIN WAS FOCUSED NORTH OF HUMBOLDT BAY WITH 1 TO
1.5 INCHES ALONG THE COAST. THE BAY AND AREAS FURTHER SOUTH
GENERALLY RECEIVED 0.5 INCHES OR LESS. SKIES WILL CONTINUE TO CLEAR
TONIGHT AS DRIER AIR MOVES IN. TOGETHER, BOTH FACTORS WILL LIKELY
ALLOW FOR COOL OVERNIGHT LOWS BELOW 40 EVEN ALONG THE COAST, BUT
FREEZING CONDITIONS WILL MOST LIKELY BE RESTRICTED TO FAR INLAND
AREAS SUCH AS TRINITY COUNTY.

A TRANSIENT RIDGE WILL TILT OVER THE AREA THURSDAY AND FRIDAY,
HELPING TO CREATE SLIGHTLY WARMER AND DRIER CONDITIONS FOR THE
INTERIOR WITH HIGHS INTO THE LOW 70S POSSIBLE AROUND UKIAH AND CLEAR
LAKE. MEANWHILE, SIMILAR CONDITIONS MAY HELP FORM SHALLOW AND RAGGED
MARINE STRATUS ALONG THE COAST, AT LEAST AT NIGHT.

THE RIDGE WILL NOT LAST LONG WITH A SERIES OF SHALLOW SHORTWAVES
EXPECTED THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. THESE SHORTWAVES WILL
MOSTLY BE FOCUSED NORTH OF THE AREA WITH HEAVIEST RAIN ALONG THE
NORTH COAST. 1 TO 2 INCHES IS MOST LIKELY ALONG THE COAST WITH
LITTLE MORE THAN LIGHT WETTING RAIN FURTHER SOUTH. WHILE GUSTY SOUTH
WIND IS MOST LIKELY ALONG WITH EACH WAVE, WINDS GUSTS CURRENTLY
APPEAR UNLIKELY TO REACH AT ALL ABOVE 45 MPH. /JHW

AVIATION
A FAIRLY QUICK MOVING FRONTAL SYSTEM (WITH SIGNIFICANT UPPER LEVEL
SUPPORT) MOVED OVER NW CALIFORNIA THIS MORNING. ASSOCIATED WITH THE
WEATHER SYSTEM, PLENTY OF FLIGHT HAZARDS IMPACTED THE TAF SITES AND
THE LOCAL AREA BEFORE AND AFTER FRONTAL PASSAGE: GUSTY WINDS, LLWS
ALONG A LOW LEVEL JET, MVFR/IFR CONDITIONS...AND PERIODS OF
MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN AND SHOWERS; LLWS MOSTLY DIMINISHED AROUND
SUNRISE. POST FRONTAL SHOWERS HAVE MOSTLY DECREASED IN THE
AFTERNOON. EARLY AFTERNOON VISUAL SATELLITE IMAGERY SHOWED SOME
RESTRICTIVE CLOUDS CONTINUING TO LINGER ALONG THE NORTH COAST.
DECREASED FLIGHT HAZARDS PLUS AN OVERALL IMPROVING TREND CAN BE
EXPECTED AT THE MAIN AIR TERMINALS OVERNIGHT AND THURSDAY. /TA

MARINE
WINDS HAVE DIMINISHED AND SHIFTED NORTHWESTERLY FOLLOWING A
FRONTAL PASSAGE THIS MORNING. EVEN AS WIND WAVES DECREASE, SEAS WILL
BE REINFORCED BY A WESTERLY SWELL 8 TO 10 FEET AT 15 TO 16 SECONDS
FILLING INTO THE WATERS. NORTHERLIES ARE EXPECTED TO REDEVELOP
THURSDAY INTO EARLY FRIDAY AS WEAK HIGH PRESSURE RIDGING BUILDS INTO
THE EASTERN PACIFIC. WINDS WILL BE STRONGEST IN THE SOUTHERN WATERS
AND DOWNWIND/NEARSHORE OF CAPE MENDOCINO. HREF INDICATES A 80 TO 100
PERCENT PROBABILITY OF WIND GUSTS EXCEEDING 26-30 MPH, BUT WITH A
STEEP DROP OFF NEARING GALE FORCE GUSTS. WINDS ARE FORECAST TO TURN
SOUTHERLY AGAIN BY LATE FRIDAY INTO EARLY SATURDAY AHEAD OF ANOTHER
WEAK UPPER SHORTWAVE AS ANOTHER LONG PERIOD NW SWELL ARRIVES. AN
ACTIVE UPPER TROUGH COMPLEX WILL PRODUCE UNSETTLED CONDITIONS WITH
GUSTY SW WINDS INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK. THERE IS STILL UNCERTAINTY
REGARDING THE TIMING AND STRENGTH OF EACH FRONTAL PASSAGE, BUT SEAS
ARE LIKELY TO REMAIN NEAR OR EXCEED 10 FEET AS ADDITIONAL SWELL
ENERGY REINFORCES CONTINUOUS SOUTHERLY WIND WAVES, ESPECIALLY IN THE
NORTHERN WATERS.

BEACH HAZARDS: A WESTERLY SWELL OF AROUND 8-10 FT AT 16 SECONDS IS
FORECAST TO BUILD INTO THE WATERS FRIDAY. WITH LIGHT WINDS AND MILD
WEATHER EXPECTED FRIDAY, BEACHGOERS SHOULD BE CAUTIOUS AS THIS SWELL
PRESENTS A MODERATE SNEAKER WAVE THREAT. BE CAUTIOUS VISITING STEEP
BEACHES AND JETTIES AND REMEMBER TO NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE
OCEAN. JB
