AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EUREKA CA
533 AM PDT SUN MAR 30 2025

SYNOPSIS

STORMY WEATHER QUICKLY RETURNS TODAY WITH STRONG, GUSTY
SOUTH-SOUTHEAST WINDS FOLLOWED BY PERSISTENT RAIN THROUGH THE START
OF NEXT WEEK. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS, SMALL HAIL AND MODERATE-TO-HEAVY
DOWNPOURS POSSIBLE MONDAY THROUGH TUESDAY.

DISCUSSION

KEY MESSAGES:

-STRONG WINDS EXPECTED TODAY WITH A QUICK ARRIVING OF GUSTS UP TO
45MPH ALONG THE COAST.

-MODERATE BUT PERSISTENT RAIN FOCUSED ALONG THE NORTH COAST THROUGH
THE WEEK. HEAVIEST RAIN POTENTIAL IS ON MONDAY WITH ISOLATED
THUNDERSTORMS.

-SNOW LEVELS DROPPING AS LOW AS 2000 FEET OVERNIGHT MIDWEEK IN
TRINITY COUNTY WITH LIGHT SNOW ON HIGHWAYS 3, 36, AND 299.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

A SURFACE LOW PRESSURE CENTER IS APPROACHING FROM THE WEST THIS
MORNING AND IS FORECASTED TO DRIVE NORTHEASTWARD NEAR THE COAST
DURING THE DAY ON SUNDAY BEFORE MIGRATING NORTHWARD TONIGHT. IN ITS
WAKE, ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE CENTER WILL FORM IN THE NE PACIFIC OCEAN,
CONTINUING OUR TREND OF STORMY CONDITIONS THROUGH WEDNESDAY AT THE
EARLIEST. LATER IN THE WEEK, TEMPERATURES WILL BE SLOW TO INCREASE
DUE TO AN ELEVATED COLD AIR MASS. RELIEF FROM STORMY WEATHER IS
POSSIBLE AT THE END OF THE COMING WEEK AS MODELS ARE BEGINNING TO
SIGNAL TO UPPER LEVEL RIDGING BUILDING IN AROUND THE SECOND HALF OF
FRIDAY OR SO.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND DEVIATIONS:

THE PATH OF THE LOW PRESSURE CENTER WILL DICTATE HOW STRONG WINDS
WILL BE ALONG THE COAST. CURRENTLY, THE HIRESARW MODEL AND 08Z
HRRR SHOW THE DEL NORTE COASTAL HEADLANDS RECEIVING GUSTS JUST SHY
OF 50MPH AROUND MIDDAY TODAY. BEYOND THE WIND, RAIN ON MONDAY
COULD BE HEIGHTENED DUE TO INCREASED POTENTIAL OF CONVECTION,
POSSIBLY CREATING INCREASED RAIN RATES AND A SMALL HAIL THREAT.
WEDNESDAY MORNING SHOWS COLD AIR ALOFT CREATING LOWER SNOW LEVELS
ACROSS NW CALIFORNIA. MODELS CURRENTLY SHOW A STRONG DIURNAL
PATTERN WITH SNOW LEVELS DIPPING TO AROUND 2500 FEET AT NIGHT
(NBM) AND JUMPING ABOVE 3000 FEET DURING THE DAY. ANY SNOW THAT
FALLS AT LOWER ELEVATIONS WILL BE VERY INCONSISTENT AND LIKELY NOT
VERY IMPACTFUL.

AVIATION

THIS MORNING, GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS ALONG WITH RAIN WILL
AFFECT AREA TERMINALS. EARLY THIS MORNING LLWS IS EXPECTED FOR THE
TERMINALS BEFORE THE STRONGER WINDS BEGIN TO MIX DOWN. THE STRONGEST
GUSTS ARE EXPECTED FOR TERMINALS CLOSER TO THE COAST IN HUMBOLDT AND
DEL NORTE COUNTIES WITH GUSTS TO 40 KNOTS POSSIBLE, ESPECIALLY
AROUND COASTAL DEL NORTE. WITH HEAVIER SHOWERS THROUGHOUT TODAY,
PERIODS OF MVFR CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY AT TERMINALS WHERE SHOWERS
MOVE OVERHEAD. THE STRONGEST GUSTS ARE EXPECTED LATE THIS MORNING
AND INTO THE EARLY AFTERNOON AND ARE EXPECTED TO SLIGHTLY DECREASE
INTO THIS EVENING. /JLW

MARINE

A PASSING COMPACT AREA OF LOW PRESSURE CONTINUES TO
APPROACH THE COASTAL WATERS. SOUTHERLY WINDS CONTINUE TO INCREASE
WITH GALE STRTENGTH IN THE OUTER ZONES, WITH FURTHER EXPANSION AND
STRENGTHENING IN ALL ZONES AND GUSTS TO 45 KTS AS THE MORNING
PROGRESSES. THESE WINDS WILL GENERATE STEEP SEAS OF 10 TO 13 FT.
WINDS AND SEAS WILL EASE SOME THIS EVENING, BUT A SECONDARY
APPROACHING TROUGH WILL CARRY PERIODS OF NEAR GALE TO GALE
CONDITIONS IN THE WATERS INTO TUESDAY. AS THE BROAD PACIFIC
NORTHWEST TROUGH BEGINS A SLOW ADVANCEMENT TOWARD THE COAST, A SOLID
FETCH OF STRONG WESTERLY WINDS WILL DRIVE IN VERY STEEP, LARGE AND
POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS WESTERLY SEAS MONDAY EVENING THROUGH TUESDAY.
SEAS UP TO 19 FT ARE CURRENTLY FORECAST, BUT SIMILAR SETUPS HAVE
GENERATED LARGER SEAS THAN FORECAST. /JJW
