DISCUSSION

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

MOST OF THE HEAVIER SNOW BANDS TODAY HAVE BEEN FOCUSED NEAR THE
US-2 CORRIDOR. WHILE THE DEPENDING SURFACE LOW PRESSURE MOVES
EAST INTO THE DAKOTAS, SNOWFALL RATES ARE DECREASING WITH A MORE
WIDESPREAD LIGHT SNOW TAKING SHAPE ACROSS NE MONTANA. THIS WILL
LEND TO ADDITIONAL 1-3" ACCUMULATIONS TONIGHT AS THIS ACTIVITY
TAPERS AND GRADUALLY SHIFTS EAST. WHILE WINDS WILL BE A LIMITING
FACTOR, THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR LAKE ENHANCEMENT OF SNOW SATURDAY
MORNING ALIGNED WITH THE DRY ARM OF FORT PECK LAKE.

LIGHTER WINDS AND SOME CLEARING WILL RESULT FROM ARCTIC HIGH
PRESSURE COMING IN OVER THE WEEKEND, WHILE ALSO LIMITING
TEMPERATURES TO AROUND OR BELOW ZERO THE REST OF THE WEEKEND.
AREAS NORTH OF THE MISSOURI RIVER WILL NEED CONSIDERATION FOR A
COLD WEATHER ADVISORY WITH PATCHY WIND CHILLS IN THE -20S,
DEPENDING ON IF THERE IS A LIGHT BREEZE BLOWING WITH TEMPERATURES
DOWN TO THE -10S SATURDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHTS.

A FEW WEAKER SYSTEMS MOVE IN FROM TUESDAY TO FRIDAY ALONG WITH A
RETURN CLOSER TO NORMAL FOR TEMPERATURES. WITH FRESH SNOW COVER IN
PLACE, SURFACE INVERSIONS WILL BE EASIER TO COME BY AND INTRODUCE
SLIGHT CHANCES FOR FREEZING RAIN WITH ANY PRECIPITATION LATER IN
THE WEEK.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:

BLENDED IN HIGHER WINDS AND SNOW CHANCES THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING
WITH ONGOING WINTER STORM OBSERVATIONS AND HIGHER RESOLUTION
MODELS. LOWERED TEMPERATURES THROUGH MONDAY BY BLENDING WITH NBM
25TH PERCENTILE TO ACCOUNT FOR SNOW COVER AND LIGHT WIND SETUP IN
ARCTIC AIRMASS. CONFIDENCE IS MODERATE FOR ADDITIONAL SNOWFALL
AMOUNTS INCLUDING LAKE EFFECT SATURDAY MORNING. CONFIDENCE IS
CURRENTLY LOW NEXT WEEK FOR HOW QUICKLY TEMPERATURES WARM UP AND
OCCURRENCE OF FREEZING DRIZZLE.
