AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HANFORD CA
231 AM PDT SAT MAR 29 2025

UPDATE

UPDATED AVIATION SECTION WITH LATEST DISCUSSION.

KEY MESSAGES

* LIGHT PRECIPITATION IS POSSIBLE TODAY, MAINLY ALONG THE SIERRA
AND TEHACHAPI FOOTHILLS. THERE IS A 30 TO 80 PERCENT CHANCE
FOR GREATER THAN ONE TENTH OF AN INCH IN THESE AREAS BY THIS
AFTERNOON.

* STRONG WIND GUSTS WILL CONTINUE ALONG THE MOJAVE SLOPES
THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON. A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR
THIS AREA DUE TO EXPECTED WINDS 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 60
MPH.

* THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR A SYSTEM TO BRING MORE SIGNIFICANT
PRECIPITATION NEXT WEEK. BUT THERE REMAINS A LARGE AMOUNT OF
UNCERTAINTY WITH THE TRACK OF THIS SYSTEM AT THIS TIME.

DISCUSSION

A WEAK SHORTWAVE MOVING THROUGH THE MEAN FLOW TODAY WILL ALLOW
FOR SOME LIGHT PRECIPITATION, THOUGH THE MAIN IMPACT IS THE
WINDS ALONG THE LEE SLOPES OF THE KERN COUNTY MOUNTAINS. THE
BROADER TROUGH PARKED OFF THE PACIFIC NW COAST WILL CONTINUE BE
THE MAJOR PLAYER OVER THE NEXT WEEK.

THAT TROUGH WILL STEER THE ATMOSPHERIC RIVER STRETCHING ACROSS
THE PACIFIC, WITH THE LATEST GUIDANCE PUSHING IT FURTHER SOUTH.
THAT TRAJECTORY IS MORE FAVORABLE FOR PRECIPITATION ACROSS
CENTRAL CALIFORNIA, THOUGH WHERE IT COMES ONSHORE WILL DRIVE HOW
MUCH. WE WILL CONTINUE TO WATCH HOW IT SHAPES UP OVER THE
WEEKEND, BUT SOME PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED EARLY NEXT WEEK.
