DISCUSSION

ISSUED AT 247 AM CST MON DEC 16 2024

FOG HAS BEEN A NUISANCE OVERNIGHT ONCE AGAIN. THE DENSE FOG
ADVISORY HAS BEEN EXTENDED IN TIME TO 17Z AND ALSO SPATIAL EXTENT.
THE MAJORITY OF THE CWA IS NOW COVERED. VISIBILITIES HAVE BEEN
BOUNCING AROUND FOR MUCH OF THE NIGHT BUT HAVE OFTEN DROPPED TO <
1/4SM ACROSS CENTRAL IL. WE SHOULD START TO SEE WIDESPREAD
IMPROVEMENT AROUND 15Z BUT DUE TO THE SUN ANGLE THIS TIME OF YEAR,
PATCHY DENSE FOG COULD CONTINUE TO 17Z.

SCATTERED SHOWERS HAVE ALSO BEEN PERSISTENT THROUGHOUT THE
OVERNIGHT HOURS. SHOWERY ACTIVITY WILL CONTINUE EAST OF I-55 INTO
MID AFTERNOON TODAY. THERE COULD BE SOME ISOLATED THUNDER IN THE
MORE ROBUST SHOWERS, WHICH IS MOST LIKELY SOUTH OF I-72. AMOUNTS
WILL GENERALLY REMAIN AROUND A TRACE TO 0.2 INCH. A DRY PERIOD IS
EXPECTED TO START BY SUNSET THIS EVENING, LASTING THROUGH TOMORROW
AFTERNOON.

A DECENT PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL SET UP OVER THE REGION TODAY AS THE
CURRENT FRONTAL SYSTEM EXITS. THIS AFTERNOON WILL ALSO BE BREEZY,
WITH WESTERLY WINDS GUSTING TO 25-30 MPH. WINDS WILL CALM DOWN AS
THE SUN SETS. HIGHS TODAY WILL BE THE WARMEST OF THE WEEK, BEING
PRIMARILY IN THE LOW 50S TO LOW 60S. A COLD FRONT WILL PASS
THROUGH LATE THIS AFTERNOON, DROPPING TEMPERATURES FOR THE REST OF
THE WEEK. LOWS TONIGHT DROP INTO THE LOW 30S. THE REST OF THE
WEEK'S HIGHS AND LOWS WILL BECOME MORE SEASONABLE (OR JUST BELOW
NORMAL) FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEK.

ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL PASS THROUGH TOMORROW, BRINGING
MORE RAIN CHANCES TOMORROW NIGHT INTO MUCH OF THE DAY WEDNESDAY.
RAINFALL AMOUNTS WON'T BE TOO IMPRESSIVE. THE 00Z.16 LREF SHOWS ONLY
A 10-20% CHANCE OF AREAS SOUTH OF I-70 GETTING A QUARTER OF AN INCH
OF PRECIP. YET ANOTHER SYSTEM COULD MAKE ITS WAY THROUGH FOR THE END
OF THE WEEK.

AVIATION
(FOR THE 12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z TUESDAY MORNING)
ISSUED AT 527 AM CST MON DEC 16 2024

FOG IS IMPACTING ALL SITES AGAIN. THERE IS SOME UNCERTAINTY ON WHEN
THIS FOG AND LOWERED CEILINGS WILL LIFT TODAY. WE SHOULD SEE GRADUAL
IMPROVEMENT THROUGH THE MORNING. BY THE AFTERNOON, SIGNIFICANT
IMPROVEMENTS FROM VLIFR/LIFR CEILINGS/VIS TO VFR CEILINGS/VIS. THE
AFTERNOON WILL ALSO BE QUITE BREEZY WITH WESTERLY WINDS GUSTS UP TO
30 KNOTS. THESE WIND GUSTS SHOULD RELAX AFTER THE SUN GOES DOWN.
SOME SHOWERS ARE PASSING THROUGH SOUTHEASTERN IL. DEC OR CMI COULD
SEE SOME DRIZZLE OR LIGHT SHOWERS, BUT THE UNCERTAINTY OF IF THEY
WILL BE IMPACTED IS HIGH.
