AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ELKO NV
139 AM PST SUN NOV 17 2024

SYNOPSIS

ACTIVE LATE FALL PATTERN CONTINUES AS AN UPPER LEVEL
TROUGH LOOKS TO BRING ANOTHER ROUND OF SNOW SHOWERS TO THE SILVER
STATE MONDAY WITH LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS. A WARMING TREND STARTS
TUESDAY AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS ACROSS THE SW US. HOWEVER ANOTHER
SYSTEM WILL BY POISED TO POUNCE FOR NEXT WEEKEND.

SHORT TERM

SUNDAY AND MONDAY

UPPER LEVEL SHORTWAVE RIDGING WILL TRANSIT THE SILVER STATE
SUNDAY, GIVING NE NEVADA A COLD START THIS MORNING WITH
TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS UP INTO THE TEENS ACROSS THE
AREA. THIS IS DUE TO THE CLEAR SKIES, LIGHT TO CALM WINDS, AND
RADIATIVE COOLING PROCESS. TEMPERATURES WHERE THERE IS STILL SNOW
COVER, COULD DROP INTO NEGATIVE TERRITORY BY SUNRISE TODAY, IN
ADDITION AREAS OF PATCHY ICE FOG MAY DEVELOP IN THE MORE SHELTERED
AREAS. AFTER SUNRISE, TEMPERATURES WILL RECOVER QUICKLY UNDER
CLEAR TO MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES AS WINDS WILL SHIFT OUT OF THE S TO SW
AT 5 TO 15 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 MPH, AHEAD OF THE NEXT UPPER
TROUGH. HIGHS SUNDAY AFTERNOON WILL REACH THE LOW 40S TO LOW 50S,
LOWS DURING THE OVERNIGHT WILL BE MUCH WARMER THAN THE PREVIOUS
NIGHT RANGING IN THE UPPER TEENS TO UPPER 20S, AS CLOUDS WILL BE
DEVELOPING DURING THE EVENING HOURS. AS MENTIONED THE NEXT UPPER
TROUGH WILL PUSH THROUGH THE PACIFIC NW AND NORTHERN NEVADA
BEGINNING EARLY MONDAY, THIS TROUGH WILL PUSH A COLD FRONT THROUGH
THE REGION, DELIVERING A REINFORCING SHOT OF COOLER AIR. HOWEVER
PRECIPITATION WITH THIS SYSTEM WILL BE ON THE LIGHTER SIDE AS
BETTER MOISTURE REMAINS TO THE NORTH OVER IDAHO. THAT BEING SAID,
THE BULK OF THE PRECIPITATION THAT DOES FALL ACROSS NV WILL BE
ALONG AND BEHIND THE COLD FRONT DURING THE LATE MORNING INTO THE
EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS MONDAY. BY MONDAY EVENING, PRECIPITATION
WILL BE IN THE FORM OF ISOLATED CONVECTIVE SHOWERS THAT WILL LAST
THROUGH TUESDAY MORNING. AMOUNTS WITH THIS SYSTEM WILL BE LIGHT,
AND AMOUNTS WILL TREND DOWNWARD THE FARTHER SOUTH ONE IS. I-80
CORRIDOR VALLEYS LOOK TO GET UP TO 0.5” OF SNOWFALL. WHEREAS US-50
CORRIDOR VALLEYS LOOK TO GET UP TO 0.2”, WITH TOPNOTCH MOST
LIKELY MISS OUT ON ANY PRECIPITATION WITH THIS SYSTEM. ROADWAY
SUMMITS AND PASSES IN NORTHERN NV WILL GET ABOUT 1” TO 2” OF NEW
SNOW WITH SIMILAR AREAS ACROSS CENTRAL NV SEEING UP TO 1”. AS THE
NORM WITH THESE QUICK HITTING SYSTEMS THE MOUNTAIN RANGES WILL BE
THE WINNERS, AS N NV RANGES COULD SEE 2” TO 6”, AND CENTRAL NV
RANGES SEEING UP TO 4” OF NEW SNOW MONDAY. TEMPERATURES MONDAY
WILL BE COOLER, WITH AFTERNOON HIGHS REACHING THE MIDDLE 20S TO
LOW 40S. WINDS WILL SHIFT OUT OF THE NW BEHIND THE FRONT WITH
SPEEDS OF 5 TO 15 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 25 MPH POSSIBLE.

LONG TERM

TUESDAY THROUGH NEXT SUNDAY

MODELS ARE SUGGESTING AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL BE POSITIONED
OVER NORTHERN NV ON TUESDAY MORNING. SINGLE DIGIT TEMPERATURES
TUESDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON HIGHS IN THE 30S ARE FORECAST AS
COOLER AIR IS PULLED IN FROM THE BACK SIDE OF THE TROUGH. BREEZY
CONDITIONS EXPECTED DUE TO A JET STREAK, WITH 10-15 KT WINDS AND
20 KT GUSTS. A FEW SNOW FLURRIES ARE POSSIBLE EARLY IN THE
MORNING, THEN THINGS DRY OUT BY NOON WHEN THE TROUGH MOVES FURTHER
EAST AND EXITS THE AREA.

HIGH PRESSURE WILL BEGIN TO MOVE IN ON WEDNESDAY, RESULTING IN
LIGHT WINDS AND RELATIVELY WARMER TEMPERATURES. LOWS IN THE TEENS
AND AFTERNOON HIGHS IN THE LOW TO MID 40S ARE EXPECTED. HIGH
PRESSURE WILL STRENGTHEN BY THURSDAY AND REMAIN IN PLACE THROUGH
EARLY SATURDAY MORNING, RESULTING IN WARMER TEMPERATURES FOR
THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. LOWS WILL BE IN THE UPPER 20S AND LOWER 30S,
WHILE AFTERNOON HIGHS WILL BE IN THE UPPER 40S AND LOWER 50S. ON
SATURDAY, MODEL GUIDANCE IS SHOWING THE POSSIBILITY OF ANOTHER
TROUGH MOVING INTO NORTHERN NV, INCREASING PRECIPITATION CHANCES
AND RESULTING IN BREEZY CONDITIONS FOR THE AREA. TEMPERATURES WILL
REMAIN IN THE UPPER 40S AND LOWER 50S ON SATURDAY AFTERNOON, AND
LOWS WILL REMAIN IN THE UPPER 20S AND LOWER 30S FOR SATURDAY AND
SUNDAY MORNINGS BEFORE COOLING ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON AS A COLD FRONT
MOVES THROUGH. SUNDAY AFTERNOON HIGHS WILL BE IN THE LOW TO MID
40S. RAIN SHOWERS ARE POSSIBLE ON SUNDAY AS THE FRONT PASSES
THROUGH, WITH A TRACE TO 0.5 INCHES OF SNOW IN HIGHER ELEVATIONS.

AVIATION

MID AND HIGH CLOUDS INCREASE TODAY AS A STORM DROPPING
IN FROM THE PACIFIC NW APPROACHES NORTHERN NV. CIGS ARE EXPECTED
TO LOWER INTO THE 4-5K FT RANGE AT KWMC KEKO AND KBAM THIS
MORNING, HOWEVER NOT EXPECTING ANY RAIN OR SNOW SHOWERS AT THESE
SITES UNTIL LATER THIS EVENING. CIGS AND VIS ARE EXPECTED TO BE
REDUCED TO MFVR OR LOWER LEVELS LATE THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT AS
RAIN AND OR SNOW SHOWERS IMPACT THE REGION INTO MONDAY MORNING.
