AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV
144 PM PST FRI NOV 15 2024

SYNOPSIS

* PERIODS OF RAIN AND SNOW CONTINUE THIS EVENING BEFORE TAPERING OFF
TONIGHT.

* LOCALLY HEAVY SNOWFALL IS POSSIBLE NEAR SOUTH LAKE, CARSON CITY,
AND AREAS TOWARDS THE SOUTHEAST THIS AFTERNOON, POTENTIALLY
CREATING TRAVEL IMPACTS FOR THE EVENING COMMUTE.

* ANOTHER STORM IS LIKELY LATE SUNDAY INTO MONDAY WITH DRIER
WEATHER FAVORED MUCH OF NEXT WEEK.

DISCUSSION

SNOW WAS FALLING AT NWS RENO AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, CREATING A
SNOW GLOBE LOOK OUT THE WINDOW. WATCH OUT ON ROADS AND SIDEWALKS
THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING FOR SLICK SPOTS. SNOW SHOWERS ARE
EXPECTED TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT PERIOD FOR AREAS
SOUTHEAST OF LAKE TAHOE, SUCH AS SOUTH LAKE TAHOE AND STATELINE.
ENSEMBLE GUIDANCE INDICATES A ROBUST BAND OF SNOWFALL THAT IS
ALREADY BEGINNING TO MATERIALIZE ON THE SOUTHEASTERN END OF LAKE
TAHOE. SNOW TOTALS UNDER THE LAKE ENHANCED BAND OF SNOW WILL
LIKELY APPROACH BOOM SCENARIOS, WITH SOME AREAS GATHERING 4-6
INCHES AND ISOLATED POCKETS OVER HIGHER TERRAIN SEEING AN
ADDITIONAL 8 INCHES. SIMILAR SIGNALS LIGHT UP THE AREA SOUTH OF
PYRAMID LAKE, STRETCHING OUT OVER I-80. THIS BAND OF SNOW WOULD
YIELD LOWER SNOW TOTALS ONCE IT FORMS, WITH UP TO 2 INCHES
POSSIBLE. THIS ACTIVITY LOOKS TO INCREASE AROUND THE EVENING
COMMUTE, SO TAKE IT SLOW IN ICE AND SNOW. MAKE SURE TO DRIVE WITH
A SAFE BRAKING DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU.
ALSO CHECK NVROADS.COM AND QUICKMAP.DOT.CA.GOV FOR THE LATEST ROAD
CONDITIONS.

ONCE THIS SYSTEM EXITS IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS ON SATURDAY,
THE COLD AIR LEFT IN PLACE WILL ALLOW ROADS TO REMAIN SLICK FOR
THE MORNING COMMUTE. SUNSHINE AND CLEARING SKIES SATURDAY WILL
HELP SOME OF THE SNOW TO MELT DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS, ONLY TO
REFREEZE IN PLACES WHERE MELT IS RUNNING OFF.

AN INCOMING SYSTEM ON SUNDAY WILL BRING GUSTY WINDS, ALONG WITH
PERIODS OF RAIN AND SNOW. THE BULK OF THE MOISTURE WILL BE ACROSS NE
CALIFORNIA AND NORTHERN NEVADA, WITH A 70-90% CHANCE FOR THE
SIERRA CREST TO ACCUMULATE ANOTHER 1-2" OF SNOW. THIS WILL FOCUS
ON THE PEAKS WEST OF LAKE TAHOE AND NORTH OF US-50. BEYOND, A
BRIEF DRYING PATTERN EMERGES AHEAD OF YET ANOTHER TROUGH THAT
LOOKS TO SWING INTO THE REGION LATE NEXT WEEK. SOME WOULD SAY THAT
OUR STORM DOOR HAS OPENED A BIT ALREADY THIS SEASON! HRICH

AVIATION

* GUSTY NORTHWESTERLY WINDS WILL PERSIST THROUGH THE AFTERNOON AS
THE FRONTAL PASSAGE SWINGS THROUGH THE AREA. KRNO HAS SEEN GUSTS
20-25 KTS ALREADY THIS AFTERNOON. TURBULENCE AND MOUNTAIN
OBSCURATIONS WILL BE PRESENT ACROSS SIERRA TERMINALS TODAY. THE
SYSTEM EXITS LATE TONIGHT, LEAVING BEHIND DECREASING WINDS AND
CLEARING SKIES.

* VFR CONDITIONS RETURN TO THE REGION SATURDAY MORNING, WITH LIGHT
AND VARIABLE WINDS. ANOTHER SYSTEM ARRIVES SUNDAY, BRINGING
GUSTY WINDS AND SNOW CHANCES TO SIERRA TERMINALS KTVL AND KTRK.
KSVE AND KLOL MAY SEE LIGHT RAIN SHOWERS ALONG WITH GUSTY
WINDS. HRICH
