AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RENO NV
1229 PM PST MON DEC 16 2024

SYNOPSIS

* RAIN, SNOW, AND GUSTY WINDS WILL DIMINISH THIS EVENING, WITH
POTENTIAL FOR BLACK ICE OVERNIGHT AND DURING THE TUESDAY AM
COMMUTE.

* VALLEY INVERSIONS AND AREAS OF FOG RETURN TUESDAY NIGHT TO
FRIDAY MORNING.

* AN ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN WILL DEVELOP NEXT WEEKEND WITH
POTENTIAL FOR PERIODS OF GUSTY WINDS, RAIN, AND SNOW THROUGH
CHRISTMAS.

DISCUSSION

POTENT LITTLE WEATHER SYSTEM WILL WEAKEN AS IT TRACKS SOUTH OF
HIGHWAY 50 THIS EVENING WITH LINGERING SNOW SHOWERS ALONG THE
SIERRA CREST THROUGH MIDNIGHT. BREEZY WINDS ACROSS MONO COUNTY
AND WESTERN NV WILL ALSO DIMINISH THIS EVENING. PLAN ON WET ROADS
FREEZING THIS EVENING OR TONIGHT WITH BLACK ICE IMPACTS POSSIBLE
FOR THE TUESDAY AM COMMUTE.

HIGH PRESSURE RETURNS FOR TUESDAY, WITH SIMULATIONS FAVORING
STRONG VALLEY INVERSIONS DEVELOPING BY WEDNESDAY AM. PLAN ON POOR
SMOKE DISPERSION FOR PRESCRIBED FIRES AND POLLUTANTS TO BUILD UP
IN URBAN VALLEYS. THE STRONG INVERSIONS ALSO BRING UNCERTAINTY
AND LOW-MEDIUM CONFIDENCE IN THE HIGH TEMPERATURE FORECAST
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY AFTERNOONS FOR VALLEYS BELOW 5000 FT.
GUIDANCE IS FAVORING HIGHS IN THE MID 50S, BUT INVERSIONS MAY
LIMIT HIGH TEMPERATURES TO THE UPPER 40S OR LOW 50S. ABOVE THE
VALLEY INVERSIONS, AFTERNOON HIGHS MAY JUMP INTO THE UPPER 50S
AND PERHAPS REACH 60 BY THURSDAY.

GOOD CONFIDENCE FOR A MORE ACTIVE WEATHER PATTERN ACROSS THE
EASTERN PACIFIC AND WESTERN US FOR FRIDAY THROUGH CHRISTMAS AS
SIMULATIONS FAVOR A SERIES OF STORMS. THE MAIN STORM TRACK WITH
AR MOISTURE SHOULD SET UP TO OUR NORTH, BUT THERE IS MEDIUM
CONFIDENCE IN AT LEAST ONE OR TWO WEATHER SYSTEMS IMPACTING THE
SIERRA AND WESTERN NV DURING PEAK HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIODS BEFORE
CHRISTMAS DAY. THE AR INFLUENCE AND MAIN STORM TRACK TO OUR NORTH
FAVORS WARMER STORMS FOR THE SIERRA WITH THE RAIN/SNOW LINES AS
HIGH AS 7000-9000 FT. BRONG

AVIATION

WINDS, MOUNTAIN WAVE TURBULENCE, AND LLWS WILL DIMINISH DURING
THE OVERNIGHT HOURS. TEMPERATURES WILL DROP BELOW FREEZING TONIGHT
WITH WET PAVEMENT/SURFACES FREEZING. THERE IS ALSO A 20% CHANCE
FOG MAY DEVELOP TONIGHT/TUESDAY AM IN NORTHERN SIERRA VALLEYS IF
SKIES CLEAR.

80% CHANCE AREAS OF FREEZING FOG RETURN TUESDAY NIGHT AND
WEDNESDAY AM IN THE NORTHERN SIERRA VALLEYS. ALSO CAN'T RULE OUT A
FEW AREAS OF FOG FOR LOWER ELEVATIONS AROUND SUSANVILLE/HONEY
LAKE BASIN, PYRAMID LAKE, AND PERHAPS IN THE VICINITY OF KRNO-
KMEV. BRONG
