AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE LAS VEGAS NV
1040 AM PDT FRI APR 25 2025

SYNOPSIS

GUSTY SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS WILL PICK UP ACROSS THE
REGION TODAY AS A LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM APPROACHES THE WEST COAST.
THIS SYSTEM WILL THEN MOVE ACROSS THE DESERT SOUTHWEST THIS
WEEKEND, BRINGING BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURES, GUSTY WINDS, AND THE
CHANCE OF A FEW ISOLATED SHOWERS. TEMPERATURES WILL RETURN TO
ABOVE NORMAL LEVELS NEXT WEEK AS THIS SYSTEM EXITS THE REGION.

UPDATE

THE LATEST HREF GUIDANCE NOW SHOWS THE POTENTIAL FOR WIND
GUSTS OF 40 TO 45 MPH SPREADING INTO THE YUCCA VALLEY AND TWENTYNINE
PALMS AREA THIS AFTERNOON AND AGAIN ON SATURDAY. THEREFORE, THE
WIND ADVISORY HAS BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE THE MORONGO BASIN ZONE
AND WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR THE SAME PERIOD AS THE WESTERN MOJAVE
DESERT AND EASTERN INYO COUNTY ADVISORY. LIKE THE OTHER AREAS,
WINDS WILL LIKELY DECREASE OVERNIGHT BEFORE INCREASING AGAIN
TOMORROW AFTERNOON. NO OTHER CHANGES WERE NEEDED TO THE FORECAST
PACKAGE THIS MORNING.

- PLANZ

SHORT TERM

THROUGH SUNDAY.

TEMPERATURES WILL RETURN TO NORMAL TODAY WITH GUSTY SOUTHWESTERLY
WINDS PICKING UP ACROSS THE REGION AS A TROUGH APPROACHES THE WEST
COAST. A WIND ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR THE WESTERN MOJAVE DESERT
AND DEATH VALLEY FROM 1:00 PM THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH 11:00 PM
TOMORROW EVENING. HREF PROBABILITIES FOR WIND GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 40
MPH IN THE MORONGO BASIN REMAIN LARGELY UNCHANGED WITH THE HIGHEST
PROBABILITIES IN MORONGO VALLEY. WHILE MORONGO VALLEY WILL LIKELY
SEE ISOLATED 40+ MPH WIND GUSTS, WE HAVE ELECTED TO NOT ISSUE A WIND
ADVISORY FOR THE ZONE AT THIS TIME DUE TO THE ISOLATED NATURE OF
THESE STRONGER GUSTS. ELSEWHERE, WIND GUSTS WILL PEAK IN THE 30 TO
40 MPH RANGE WITH LOCALIZED 40+ MPH GUSTS POSSIBLE IN AREAS OF
HIGHER TERRAIN.

THE AFOREMENTIONED TROUGH WILL MOVE THROUGH THE DESERT SOUTHWEST
OVER THE WEEKEND, BRINGING COOLER THAN NORMAL TEMPERATURES TO THE
REGION ONCE AGAIN. TEMPERATURES WILL COOLING AROUND 5 TO 10 DEGREES
BETWEEN TODAY AND TOMORROW. IN ADDITION TO COOLER THAN NORMAL
TEMPERATURES, THIS SYSTEM WILL ALSO BRING INCREASED CHANCES FOR
ISOLATED TO SCATTERED CONVECTIVE SHOWERS. THE NBM HAS BEEN
CONSISTENTLY PAINTING THE EASTERN SIERRA AND SOUTHERN GREAT BASIN
WITH THE GREATEST CHANCES OF PRECIPITATION FROM THIS SYSTEM.
HOWEVER, GIVEN THE COLD TEMPERATURES ALOFT AND STRONGER UPPER-LEVEL
FORCING WE MAY SEE LIGHT ISOLATED SHOWERS FURTHER SOUTH THAN
CURRENTLY INDICATED.

LONG TERM

MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY.

BROAD TROUGH AXIS WILL BEGIN WEAKENING MONDAY BUT WILL REMAIN
DRAPED ACROSS THE CENTRAL ROCKIES INTO THE SOUTHWEST. THIS WILL
KEEP TEMPERATURES HOVERING NEAR SEASONAL NORMALS FOR MONDAY WITH
OTHERWISE PLEASANT CONDITIONS. THEREAFTER, LARGE SCALE RIDGING
WILL BUILD ACROSS THE WESTERN US THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE
WEEK, ALLOWING TEMPERATURES TO CLIMB ABOVE NORMAL TUESDAY ONWARD.
BY THE END OF NEXT WEEK, TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE LOWER DESERTS
WILL CLIMB BACK INTO THE 90S OR GREATER, MARKING TEMPERATURES
ROUGHLY 8 TO 10 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL WITH GENERALLY LIGHT WINDS
EXPECTED.
