SHORT RANGE FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
222 PM EDT SAT JUN 02 2018

VALID 00Z SUN JUN 03 2018 - 00Z TUE JUN 05 2018

...SEVERE WEATHER THREAT MOVES INTO THE SOUTH CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI
VALLEY TODAY...

...A WET WEEKEND AHEAD FOR THE MID-ATLANTIC WITH HEAVY RAINFALL
AND FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE...

...WARM OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES COULD BREAK RECORDS FOR MANY
LOCATIONS FROM THE SOUTHERN PLAINS TO THE NORTHEAST...

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL FIRE ACROSS THE CENTRAL U.S. AS A
COLD FRONT TRACKS THROUGH THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND PROGRESS INTO
THE OHIO AND TENNESSEE VALLEYS. THE STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS A
SLIGHT RISK FOR SEVERE STORMS TO DEVELOP OVER PORTIONS OF THE MID-
AND LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY, ALONG WITH ANOTHER AREA ALONG THE
GEORGIA AND FLORIDA BORDER, THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING. THE PRIMARY
THREAT WILL BE LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WINDS, BUT ISOLATED
TORNADOES AND FLASH FLOODING CANNOT BE RULED OUT. AS THE FRONT
MOVES THROUGH THE APPALACHIANS AND THE EASTERN STATES, THE RISK
FOR STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS DECREASES TO A MARGINAL THROUGH MONDAY.

HEAVY RAIN AND FLASH FLOODING WILL LIKELY OCCUR OVER THE NORTHERN
MID-ATLANTIC THIS WEEKEND. TROPICAL MOISTURE STREAMING NORTHWARD
INTO THE REGION WILL INTERACT WITH A STALLED SURFACE LOW AND
FRONTAL BOUNDARY TO PRODUCE WIDESPREAD CONVECTION. MUCH OF THIS
REGION IS ALREADY SATURATED FROM RECENT HEAVY RAIN, AND GIVEN THAT
ADDITIONAL ROUNDS OF RAIN IS FORECAST, FLOODING AND FLASH FLOODING
WILL BE A CONCERN. WPC HAS A MODERATE RISK FOR EXCESSIVE RAINFALL
IN EFFECT THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING FOR MUCH OF THE DEL-MAR-VA
REGION. FLOOD WATCHES ARE CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FROM VIRGINIA TO
SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY.

A VAST PORTION OF THE SOUTHWEST AND THE SOUTHERN/CENTRAL PLAINS
WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE A HEAT WAVE AS A STRONG RIDGE REMAINS
ANCHORED OVER THE REGION. AFTERNOON HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE
GENERALLY 5 TO 10 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR MOST LOCATIONS, EXCEPT
ACROSS PARTS OF THE SOUTHERN PLAINS WHERE VALUES IN THE UPPER 90S
TO LOW 100S ARE POSSIBLE, WHICH COULD APPROACH OR EXCEED RECORDS
FOR A FEW PLACES. THE BIGGER STORY WITH THIS WARMTH HOWEVER WILL
BE THE VERY WARM OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES, WITH WIDESPREAD LOWS IN
THE 70S EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTHERN PLAINS TO THE MIDDLE
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AND ALSO PARTS OF THE EASTERN STATES. THESE
KINDS OF TEMPERATURES COULD BREAK OVERNIGHT HIGH MINIMUM RECORDS
FOR DOZENS OF LOCATIONS.
