SHORT RANGE FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
358 PM EDT FRI JUN 22 2018

VALID 00Z SAT JUN 23 2018 - 00Z MON JUN 25 2018

...SEVERE THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL WILL BE GREATEST ACROSS PORTIONS
OF THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS THROUGHOUT THE WEEKEND...

...FLASH FLOODING CONCERNS WILL LESSEN ACROSS THE EAST BEGINNING
SATURDAY WHILE THEY REMAIN ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE PLAINS AND LOWER
MISSISSIPPI VALLEY...

...ABUNDANT HEAT IN STORE FOR CALIFORNIA AND THE DESERT SOUTHWEST
WHILE FIRE WEATHER CONCERNS LOOM OVER THE FOUR CORNERS REGION...

A LONG-STANDING FRONTAL BOUNDARY EXTENDING FROM THE MID-ATLANTIC
REGION INTO THE SOUTHERN PLAINS WILL BE A SIGNIFICANT FACTOR IN
THE WEATHER ACROSS MUCH OF THE LOWER 48 THROUGH THE UPCOMING
WEEKEND. THE FRONT WILL SEPARATE HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS TO THE
SOUTH FROM COOLER THAN AVERAGE TO AVERAGE TEMPERATURES TO ITS
NORTH.

FLASH FLOOD POTENTIAL WILL LINGER ACROSS NORTHERN INDIANA, CENTRAL
OHIO INTO EASTERN VIRGINIA THROUGH LATE TONIGHT. THIS REGION IS
OUT AHEAD OF AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE OVER THE OHIO VALLEY WITH
SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS FORECAST TO SPREAD
EAST-NORTHEASTWARD INTO THE NORTHEAST FOR SATURDAY, BUT WITH A
REDUCED FLASH FLOOD AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORM RISK. THE GREATER
POTENTIAL FOR SEVERE STORMS...VIA THE STORM PREDICTION
CENTER...WILL BE ACROSS THE SOUTHERN AND CENTRAL HIGH PLAINS THIS
EVENING, AND INTO NORTHERN TEXAS/EASTERN OKLAHOMA AND THE OZARKS
FOR SATURDAY, OUT AHEAD OF AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE. IT IS HERE
ACROSS THE PLAINS AND SOUTH THAT A BETTER COMBINATION OF WIND
SHEAR AND INSTABILITY WILL BE PRESENT TO HELP SUPPORT SEVERE
WEATHER POTENTIAL. YET ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL WAVE WILL MOVE INTO THE
CENTRAL PLAINS ON SUNDAY POSSIBLY HELPING SET THE STAGE FOR
ANOTHER ROUND OF SEVERE STORMS. ANY SEVERE STORMS THAT DEVELOP
WILL HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF PRODUCING TORRENTIAL DOWNPOURS WITH
FLASH FLOODING, FOCUSED GENERALLY FROM EASTERN COLORADO AND KANSAS
INTO THE LOWER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY OVER THE WEEKEND.

ACROSS THE WEST, UPPER LEVEL RIDGING WILL KEEP THE REGION HOT AND
DRY WITH NO RAIN IN THE FORECAST. EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS AND HEAT
ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT FROM THE SACRAMENTO/SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY OF
CALIFORNIA INTO THE DESERT SOUTHWEST, WHILE RED FLAG WARNINGS IN
THE VICINITY OF THE FOUR CORNERS WILL KEEP THE FOCUS ON INCREASED
THREATS OF WILDFIRES GIVEN THE ADDED FACTOR OF GUSTY WINDS.
