SHORT RANGE FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
137 AM EST SUN MAR 10 2019

VALID 12Z SUN MAR 10 2019 - 12Z TUE MAR 12 2019

...IMPROVING CONDITIONS FOR THE EASTERN U.S. BY MONDAY AS STORM
SYSTEM DEPARTS THE REGION AND MORE PRECIPITATION RETURNS TO THE
SOUTHWESTERN U.S. BY TUESDAY...

THE LARGE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM THAT HAS DELIVERED BLIZZARD
CONDITIONS TO MUCH OF THE DAKOTAS AND MIDWEST WILL BE CROSSING THE
NORTHERN GREAT LAKES BY SUNDAY MORNING. THE STRONG PRESSURE
GRADIENT WITH THIS SURFACE LOW WILL ENSURE THE CONTINUANCE OF
STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS ON SUNDAY ACROSS MUCH OF THE NORTH-CENTRAL
U.S. AND ACROSS THE NORTHEAST, AND HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED ACROSS
THE LAKE SUPERIOR REGION AS THE MAIN SURFACE LOW EXITS ACROSS
ONTARIO. SIGNIFICANT SNOW IS ALSO EXPECTED ACROSS INTERIOR
PORTIONS OF NEW ENGLAND, AND FREEZING RAIN IS ALSO A GOOD
POSSIBILITY ACROSS SOME OF THE INTERIOR VALLEYS OF PENNSYLVANIA
AND UPSTATE NEW YORK THROUGH EARLY SUNDAY. TRAVEL DISRUPTIONS ARE
LIKELY FOR MANY OF THOSE AREAS.

ALTHOUGH THE HEAVIEST RAIN AND STRONGEST STORMS SHOULD BE OVER BY
THE BEGINNING OF THIS FORECAST PERIOD SUNDAY MORNING, SOME
LINGERING SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE LIKELY ACROSS PARTS OF THE
GULF COAST REGION AND THE SOUTHEAST U.S. ON SUNDAY BEFORE THE COLD
FRONT PASSES THROUGH THE REGION. GIVEN THE PROGRESSIVE NATURE OF
THE BOUNDARY, THE FLOODING POTENTIAL WILL BE LIMITED. A BRIEF
RETURN TO QUIETER WEATHER CONDITIONS IS EXPECTED FOR EARLY IN THE
WEEK BEFORE THE NEXT STORM SYSTEM GATHERS STRENGTH ACROSS THE
SOUTHWESTERN U.S. AND THEN WESTERN HIGH PLAINS BY MIDWEEK.

IN TERMS OF TEMPERATURES, READINGS ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST AND
MID-ATLANTIC REGION WILL BE WARMER THAN AVERAGE THROUGH MONDAY
AHEAD OF THE COLD FRONT APPROACHING FROM THE MIDWEST. ACROSS THE
CENTRAL PART OF THE NATION, A LARGE SURFACE HIGH WILL KEEP
TEMPERATURES NEAR TO BELOW AVERAGE ACROSS THE PLAINS AND ROCKIES.
OUT WEST, ANOTHER UPPER LEVEL SYSTEM MOVING DOWN THE WEST COAST
WILL BRING SOME RAIN TO PARTS OF CALIFORNIA, WITH RAIN AND
MOUNTAIN SNOW INCREASING BY MONDAY AFTERNOON ACROSS SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA AND THE SOUTHWEST. THIS WILL LEAD TO A NEW SURFACE LOW
DEVELOPING ACROSS THE PLAINS JUST BEYOND THE END OF THIS FORECAST
PERIOD ON WEDNESDAY.
