HAWAII EXTENDED FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
325 AM EST THU DEC 14 2023

VALID 00Z FRI DEC 15 2023 - 00Z FRI DEC 22 2023

PER SURFACE OBSERVATIONS AND SURFACE ANALYSIS, A COLD FRONT IS
PASSING ACROSS THE STATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT, WITH SHOWERS OCCURRING
IN THE VICINITY OF THE FRONT. AN ANOMALOUSLY DEEP TROUGH ALOFT AND
A HIGH PRESSURE CENTER AT THE SURFACE WILL CONTINUE PUSHING THE
FRONT PROGRESSIVELY SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE BIG ISLAND INTO THURSDAY.
BEHIND THE FRONT, DRIER DEWPOINTS AND SLIGHTLY COOLER TEMPERATURES
ARE FORECAST WHILE NORTHEASTERLY WINDS WILL BE RATHER STRONG,
PROMPTING WIND ADVISORIES. WINDY NORTHEASTERLIES MAY CONTINUE INTO
FRIDAY BEFORE WINDS GRADUALLY DECREASE IN MAGNITUDE INTO THE
WEEKEND (THOUGH REMAINING BREEZY) WHILE VEERING A BIT TO A MORE
EASTERLY DIRECTION. GENERALLY DRY CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY FOR LATE
WEEK GIVEN THE BELOW NORMAL MOISTURE IN PLACE BEHIND THE FRONT.
MOISTURE WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE NEXT WEEK WHILE EASTERLY TRADES
CONTINUE AND COULD RESTRENGTHEN SOMEWHAT AS A SURFACE HIGH
TRAVERSES NORTH OF HAWAII. THIS COULD LEAD TO WINDWARD/MAUKA
SHOWERS, PERHAPS BECOMING MORE WIDESPREAD INTO THE LATTER HALF OF
NEXT WEEK WHEN MODELS INDICATE PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES
INCREASING TO ABOVE NORMAL BY VARYING DEGREES (THE GREATEST
ANOMALIES SHOWN BY THE GFS) BY THEN.
