HAWAII EXTENDED FORECAST DISCUSSION
NWS WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER COLLEGE PARK MD
300 AM EST FRI JAN 12 2024

VALID 00Z SAT JAN 13 2024 - 00Z SAT JAN 20 2024

AS OF LATE THURSDAY NIGHT/EARLY FRIDAY MORNING, A STRONG COLD
FRONT (ACCOMPANIED BY SHOWERS) IS MOVING QUICKLY THROUGH THE STATE
AND SHOULD BE WELL PAST THE BIG ISLAND BY FRIDAY MORNING. BREEZY
TO STRONG NORTHWESTERLY WINDS ARE OCCURRING BEHIND THIS FRONT,
WHICH ARE FORECAST TO GRADUALLY WEAKEN THROUGH FRIDAY AND
SATURDAY. THE FRONT IS ALSO BRINGING IN WHAT THE HONOLULU FORECAST
OFFICE IS CHARACTERIZING AS THE DRIEST AIR MASS OF THE SEASON, AS
DEWPOINTS DROP INTO THE 50S THROUGHOUT THE STATE. NOTICEABLY
COOLER TEMPERATURES CAN BE EXPECTED INTO THE WEEKEND BEHIND THE
FRONT. SOME SHOWERS ARE POSSIBLE PARTICULARLY FRIDAY UNDERNEATH
THE UPPER LOW PROVIDING FORCING, BUT THE LIMITED MOISTURE SHOULD
MAKE ANY SHOWERS STAY LIGHT, AND DRIER CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY INTO
THE WEEKEND AS THE UPPER LOW DRIFTS AWAY.

WINDS LOOK TO BE RATHER LIGHT BY SUNDAY WITH HIGH PRESSURE
OVERHEAD. A FRONT MAY STALL TO THE NORTH OF THE STATE FOR THE
EARLY PART OF THE WEEK, LEADING WINDS TO SHIFT TO MORE
SOUTHWESTERLY AHEAD OF IT. BUT THEN THERE IS RATHER GOOD MODEL
AGREEMENT FOR THE MEDIUM RANGE PERIOD FOR ANOTHER COLD FRONT TO
COME ACROSS HAWAII AROUND TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY WITH RAIN EXPECTED
ALONG AND AHEAD OF THE FRONT. GUSTY NORTHWESTERLY WINDS MAY BE
POSSIBLE AGAIN BEHIND THE FRONT, BEFORE WEAKENING UNDER HIGH
PRESSURE INTO LATE NEXT WEEK. REMARKABLY, OVER THE NEXT WEEK, NO
DAYS OF TYPICAL EASTERLY TRADES ARE EXPECTED.
