NORTHERN ALASKA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FAIRBANKS AK
223 PM AKST MON DEC 16 2024

SYNOPSIS

LIGHT SNOW WILL BE MOVING THROUGH THE WESTERN INTERIOR AND WEST
COAST TODAY WITH AROUND 1 TO 3 INCHES OF ACCUMULATION. OTHERWISE,
WE ARE ENTERING A PERIOD OF DRIER WEATHER THIS WEEK AS A RIDGE
BUILDS IN FROM CANADA PROVIDING SOUTHERLY FLOW OVER THE AK RANGE.
WINDS WILL BE GUSTY IN DELTA JUNCTION TODAY AND THROUGH THIS WEEK
WITH A TANANA VALLEY JET PERSISTING. THE NORTH SLOPE WILL BE
BREEZY AND SEASONABLY CHILLY AS AN ARCTIC HIGH KEEPS IT DRY.

DISCUSSION

KEY WEATHER MESSAGES...

CENTRAL AND EASTERN INTERIOR...
- BREEZY IN DELTA JUNCTION WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH AT TIMES
THROUGH THIS WEEK.

- LINGERING SNOW FOR THE SOUTHERN SLOPES OF THE ALASKA RANGE TODAY
WITH AN INCH OR LESS OF ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE.

- WARMING TREND TO NEAR/SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES THIS
WEEK.

WEST COAST AND WESTERN INTERIOR...
- LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW AT TIMES THIS AFTERNOON WITH 1 TO 3
INCHES OF ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS THE AREA. SLIGHTLY HIGHER IN THE
NULATO HILLS AND BENDELEBEN MOUNTAINS WITH UP TO 3-6 INCHES
POSSIBLE

- GUSTY WINDS IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND ALONG THE COAST WITH
BLOWING SNOW POSSIBLE.

- WARMING TREND FOR THE REST OF THE WEEK TO NEAR/SLIGHTLY ABOVE
NORMAL TEMPERATURES.

NORTH SLOPE AND BROOKS RANGE...
- BLOWING SNOW ALONG THE EASTERN ARCTIC COAST TODAY BUT THIS
BECOMES LIMITED TONIGHT AS WIND DECREASES.

- SEASONABLY CHILLY WEATHER WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS
TO TEENS BELOW 0.

- PRECIPITATION IS NOT EXPECTED UNTIL LATER THIS WEEK OR THIS
WEEKEND.

ANALYSIS AND FORECAST CONFIDENCE...
HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE ARCTIC WILL KEEP THE NORTH SLOPE AND BROOKS
RANGE DRY AND CHILLY. OTHERWISE, A HIGH OVER CANADA WILL KEEP THE
INTERIOR SEASONABLY COOL AND DRY EARLY THIS WEEK, THEN WARMER
TOWARDS THE END OF THE WEEK WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES. ON THE
WEST COAST, LOWS IN THE BERING SEA KEEP A SLIGHT CHANCE FOR SNOW
FOR ST. LAWRENCE ISLAND THIS WEEK, THOUGH MOST OF THE AREA REMAINS
DRY AND ON A GRADUAL WARMING TREND.

EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...
NOT MUCH TO SPEAK OF. QUIET WEATHER TO END THE WEEK, THEN SLIGHT
CHANCES FOR SNOW TOWARDS THIS WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE
TO BE AROUND OR ABOVE NORMAL THIS WEEKEND. AS OF NOW, NO
SIGNIFICANT WEATHER IS EXPECTED FOR THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE.

COASTAL HAZARD POTENTIAL DAYS 3 AND 4...NONE.
