AT APPROXIMATELY 118 PM CDT, A DOWNBURST WITH TOP WIND SPEEDS OF  
80 MPH DEVELOPED ON THE WESTERN SHORE OF LAKE GUNTERSVILLE IN  
THE TANGLEWOOD AREA. JUST DOWNSLOPE FROM THE RIDGELINE AND ALONG  
HIGHWAY 79, NUMEROUS LARGE HARDWOOD TREES WERE SNAPPED AND  
UPROOTED ON BOTH THE WESTERN AND EASTERN SIDES OF THE HIGHWAY.  
THIS TYPE OF TREE DAMAGE CONTINUED SOUTHEAST ALONG PINE ISLAND  
CIRCLE. THE DOWNBURST THEN CROSSED THE LAKE, EMERGING ON THE  
OPPOSITE SIDE AT THE MOUNTAIN LAKES RESORT. HERE, LARGE TREES WERE  
PRIMARILY UPROOTED.  AS ONE TREE UPROOTED, IT LIFTED A SMALL HOME  
FIXED TO A TRAILER FOUNDATION, TILTING THE HOME PARTLY ONTO ITS  
SIDE.  AS THE DOWNBURST MOVED INLAND ALONG MURPHY HILL RD, IT  
UPROOTED SEVERAL TREES AND DAMAGED A SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE. THE  
DAMAGE PATH ALONG THE DOWNBURST MEASURED APPROXIMATELY 2.2 MILES,  
QUALIFYING IT AS A MICROBURST.  WHILE SNAPPED HARDWOOD TREES ARE  
TRADITIONALLY QUANTIFIED AT 93 MPH OR MORE, WET ANTECEDENT  
CONDITIONS HAD OCCURRED IN THE AREA, WITH THIRTEEN DAYS IN A ROW  
OF MEASURABLE RAINFALL, PRODUCING WEAKENED SOILS AND TREES.  THIS  
LED US TO SKEW TOWARD LOWER ESTIMATED WIND SPEEDS. THE MAXIMUM  
WIND GUST MEASURED BY A SURFACE STATION DURING THESE STORMS WAS 51
