..SNOW SHOWERS AND GUSTY WINDS THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS

A STRONG COLD FRONT MOVED THROUGH THE REGION TODAY PUSHING THE
RAIN EAST INTO THE ATLANTIC AND ALLOWING MUCH COLDER AIR TO FILTER
SOUTHEASTWARD INTO THE REGION. GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS ALONG THE
HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE APPALACHIANS HAS RESULTED IN THE
DEVELOPMENT OF SNOW SHOWERS ONCE AGAIN, MAINLY ALONG THE WESTERN
SLOPES. JUST LIKE LAST FRIDAY, THIS MAY RESULT IN MINOR
ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW IN SOME AREAS. AS TEMPERATURES DROP BELOW
FREEZING THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE EVENING IN AREAS OF
MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN WEST OF THE BLUE RIDGE, ROADS MAY BECOME SNOW
COVERED AND HAZARDOUS. IN ADDITION, RESIDUAL WATER FROM EARLIER
DAY RAINFALL MAY FREEZE RESULTING IN AN ICE/SNOW MIXTURE IN SPOTS
ON THESE ROADS.

NOTE THAT A BRIEF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW SHOWER, EVEN THOUGH
TYPICALLY ONLY LASTING A FEW MINUTES, CAN QUICKLY RESULT IN THE
ROAD BEING COVERED WITH A THIN SHEET OF SNOW AND ICE. ROADS CAN BE
COME SLICK AND HAZARDOUS VERY QUICKLY IN THESE SITUATIONS CATCHING
MOTORISTS OFF GUARD. THE SEVERELY REDUCED VISIBILITY WITHIN THESE
SNOW SHOWERS FURTHER ADDS TO THE HAZARDOUS ROAD CONDITIONS.

IF YOU PLAN TO TRAVEL THROUGH THE MOUNTAINS TONIGHT WEST OF THE
BLUE RIDGE, BUT ESPECIALLY NEAR AND WEST OF THE WEST
VIRGINIA/VIRGINIA LINE BETWEEN HOT SPRINGS, COVINGTON, BLACKSBURG,
AND WYTHEVILLE AND FURTHER WESTWARD LOCATIONS, BE PREPARED TO
ENCOUNTER AREAS OF WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE WORST CONDITIONS
ARE EXPECTED TO OCCUR BETWEEN NOW AND MIDNIGHT.

STAY TUNED TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR COMMERCIAL RADIO AND
TELEVISION FOR THE LATEST WEATHER INFORMATION.
