SUMMARY:  
THE ELK CITY TORNADO INITIALLY TOUCHED DOWN AROUND 646 PM CDT  
ABOUT 3 MILES WEST-NORTHWEST OF CARTER IN BECKHAM COUNTY, AND  
MOVED NORTHEAST PRODUCING TREE AND POWER LINE DAMAGE. ONE FATALITY  
OCCURRED IN A VEHICLE AS THIS TORNADO CROSSED STATE HIGHWAY 152  
NEAR STATE HIGHWAY 34. THE TORNADO CONTINUED NORTHEAST PRODUCING  
MORE TREE AND POWER LINE DAMAGE AS WELL AS DAMAGE TO A FEW HOMES,  
MOBILE HOMES AND OUTBUILDINGS, THEN MOVED ACROSS ELK CITY  
RESERVOIR AND SUBDIVISIONS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF ELK CITY ON BOTH  
SIDES OF STATE HIGHWAY 6. CONTINUING NORTHEAST, THE TORNADO  
CROSSED INTO WASHITA COUNTY SOUTHEAST OF ELK CITY AND DISSIPATED  
LESS THAN ONE MILE SOUTH OF INTERSTATE 40 ABOUT 3 MILES WEST OF  
CANUTE AROUND 718 PM. EF2 DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED IN BECKHAM COUNTY  
FROM 2.5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF ELK CITY RESERVOIR INTO THE SOUTH SIDE  
OF ELK CITY. PRELIMINARY ESTIMATES FROM BECKHAM COUNTY EMERGENCY  
MANAGEMENT INDICATE 8 BUSINESSES AND OVER 200 HOMES WERE DAMAGED  
OR DESTROYED BY THIS TORNADO.  
 
EF SCALE: THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO  
THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES.
