THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN MELBOURNE HAS ISSUED A BEACH  
HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR ROUGH SURF AND A MODERATE RIP CURRENT RISK,  
WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING.  
 
* HAZARDS...HEAVY BREAKING WAVES, A NORTHWARD FLOWING LONGSHORE  
CURRENT AND LIFE THREATENING RIP CURRENTS.  
 
* TIMING...ROUGH SURF WILL BE PRESENT ALL DAY. THE THREAT FOR RIP  
CURRENTS WILL BE HIGHEST THIS AFTERNOON DUE TO TIDAL EFFECTS,  
EXCEPT THEY WILL EXIST ALL DAY NEAR PIERS, JETTIES AND REEFS.  
 
* POTENTIAL IMPACTS...ROUGH SURF CAN KNOCK YOU DOWN AND MAKE YOU  
SUSCEPTIBLE TO SEAWARD FLOWING RIP CURRENTS.  
 
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...  
 
SWIM NEAR A LIFEGUARD. IF CAUGHT IN A RIP CURRENT, RELAX AND  
FLOAT. DON'T SWIM AGAINST THE CURRENT. IF ABLE, SWIM IN A  
DIRECTION FOLLOWING THE SHORELINE. IF UNABLE TO ESCAPE, FACE THE  
SHORE AND CALL OR WAVE FOR HELP.
