WEATHER SUMMARY FOR PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL PLAINS
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HASTINGS NE
633 AM CDT TUE JUL 16 2019

BREAKING DOWN WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE REST OF THE WORK WEEK...THE
NUMBER ONE STORY WILL BE INCREASING HEAT...PARTICULARLY FOR
WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY...WHEN AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH REMAINS IN
EFFECT FOR OUR ENTIRE COVERAGE AREA. TAKING THINGS ONE DAY AT
TIME...AND FOCUSING FIRST ON TODAY...TEMPERATURES ARE ACTUALLY
EXPECTED TO BE FAIRLY SIMILAR TO YESTERDAY...MEANING FAIRLY
HOT...BUT NOT OVERLY-HOT. ACTUAL HIGH TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO
REACH THE LOW 90S IN MOST OF OUR NEBRASKA COVERAGE AREA...WITH MID
TO UPPER 90S MORE COMMON IN MUCH OF NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS ALONG WITH
THE FURNAS COUNTY NEBRASKA AREA. FACTORING IN HUMIDITY...HEAT INDEX
VALUES THIS AFTERNOON SHOULD TOP OUT A FEW DEGREES EITHER SIDE OF
THE 100 MARK. THE OTHER MAIN STORY TODAY WILL BE THE POSSIBILITY OF
AT LEAST LIMITED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY...ESPECIALLY IN OUR NEBRASKA
COVERAGE AREA. THE OVERALL-BEST CHANCES WILL FOCUS RIGHT AWAY THIS
MORNING...AND THEN PERHAPS AGAIN LATER THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT.
IN FACT...THERE IS A MARGINAL RISK THAT A FEW OF THE AFTERNOON AND
EVENING STORMS COULD BE SEVERE. DEPENDING ON HOW LONG THUNDERSTORMS
AND ASSOCIATED CLOUD COVER LINGER TODAY...THERE IS A CHANCE THAT
TEMPERATURES COULD FALL A BIT SHORT OF CURRENT EXPECTATIONS IN SOME
AREAS...SO THIS IS SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND. HEADING INTO
WEDNESDAY...TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO GENERALLY INCREASE BY 3 TO
5 DEGREES...MEANING MORE IN THE WAY OF MID TO UPPER 90S ACROSS MOST
OF THE AREA...AND SOME 100S ESPECIALLY NEAR AND SOUTH OF THE KANSAS
BORDER. THIS INCREASE WILL ALSO HELP DRIVE HEAT INDEX READINGS
CLOSER TO 105 DEGREES OR HIGHER IN MANY AREAS...THUS JUSTIFYING THE
EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH. THERE ARE ALSO CHANCES FOR AT LEAST LIMITED
THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY LATE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON INTO WEDNESDAY
NIGHT...A FEW OF WHICH COULD BE SEVERE. THE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS
HEAT CONTINUES RIGHT ON INTO THURSDAY AND FRIDAY...AS THUNDERSTORM
CHANCES DISAPPEAR FROM THE FORECAST. FOR THOSE LOOKING AHEAD TO OUR
NEXT COOL-DOWN...CURRENT INDICATIONS SUGGEST THAT AT LEAST A MODEST
ONE WILL ARRIVE BY THE SUNDAY INTO MONDAY TIME FRAME.
