WEATHER SUMMARY FOR PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL PLAINS
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HASTINGS NE
318 AM CST THU DEC 8 2022

CONCENTRATING ON THESE NEXT THREE DAYS...BY FAR THE MAIN CONCERNS
ARE RIGHT AWAY TODAY...AS MOST OF OUR COVERAGE AREA IS STILL
EXPECTED TO RECEIVE AT LEAST A LIGHT GLAZE OF ICE FROM FREEZING
RAIN...WITH SMALL POCKETS OF SLEET OR SNOW ALSO POSSIBLE IN MORE
LIMITED AREAS. ONCE WE GET PAST TODAYS ROUGH PATCH THOUGH...FRIDAY
AND SATURDAY LOOK TO BE SMOOTH SAILING WITH A RETURN TO DRY WEATHER
AND GRADUALLY-WARMING TEMPERATURES. DIGGING INTO MORE DETAIL...AND
CONCENTRATING ON TODAY...THE OVERALL STORY IS THAT WHILE UNTREATED
ROADS AND SURFACES ARE STILL EXPECTED TO GET SLICK AT SOME
POINT...THE EXPECTED ICING IS DEVELOPING NORTHWARD INTO OUR COVERAGE
AREA A BIT SLOWER THAN PREVIOUSLY EXPECTED. VERY GENERALLY...ONLY
SOUTHERN PARTS OF OUR AREA...MAINLY SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 6 DOWN INTO
KANSAS...ARE EXPECTED TO REALIZE A THREAT OF ICY ROADS BY SUNRISE.
MEANWHILE...ESPECIALLY MOST NEBRASKA COUNTIES ALONG NORTH OF
INTERSTATE 80 WILL HAVE TO WAIT A BIT LONGER INTO THE MORNING FOR
ICING TO DEVELOP...AS FREEZING RAIN GRADUALLY SPREADS
NORTH-NORTHEAST WITH TIME. BY NOON...ICY ROADS WILL BE POSSIBLE
ACROSS NEARLY ALL OF OUR COVERAGE AREA...WITH FAR NORTH-NORTHEAST
LOCAL COUNTIES SUCH AS GREELEY AND NANCE PROBABLY BEING AMONG THE
LAST TO REALIZE ITS ARRIVAL. ONCE ICE DEVELOPS...IT COULD STICK
AROUND FOR THE REST OF THE DAY IN MOST OF OUR COVERAGE AREA...GIVEN
THAT TEMPERATURES IN MOST PLACES WILL STRUGGLE TO RISE ABOVE
FREEZING. HOWEVER...OUR FAR COUNTIES ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE KANSAS
BORDER ARE MOST FAVORED TO RISE SLIGHTLY ABOVE FREEZING...MELTING
OFF ANY EARLY-DAY ICING. WHILE FREEZING RAIN WILL CERTAINLY BE THE
MAIN PRECIPITATION TYPE IN OUR AREA TODAY...SPOTTY POCKETS OF SLEET
SHOWERS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE. AS FOR SNOW...THE VAST MAJORITY OF OUR
COVERAGE AREA WILL PROBABLY NOT SEE ANY AT ALL...BUT ESPECIALLY LATE
THIS AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING...A DUSTING CANNOT BE RULED OUT FOR A
FEW COUNTIES NORTH OF I-80. IF THERE IS ONE REAL POSITIVE ABOUT
TODAYS WEATHER...ITS THAT WINDS WILL BE UNUSUALLY LIGHT COMPARED TO
MOST OF OUR WEATHER SYSTEMS...WITH SPEEDS ONLY AVERAGING AROUND 10
MPH AT MOST. VERY BRIEFLY ADDRESSING FRIDAY AND SATURDAY...EACH DAY
WILL FEATURE QUITE A BIT OF SUNSHINE...WITH HIGHS FRIDAY UPPER 30S
TO UPPER 40S...AND HIGHS SATURDAY BUMPING UP TO BETWEEN THE LOW 40S
AND LOW 50S.
