SURVEY SUMMARY:

A LANDSPOUT TORNADO WAS CONFIRMED VIA EYEWITNESS REPORTS AND A
DAMAGE SURVEY IN NORTHER NUCKOLLS COUNTY ON SUNDAY, MAY 24TH.
LANDSPOUT TORNADOES ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH SUPERCELL
THUNDERSTORMS AND OFTEN FORM FROM OTHERWISE NON-SEVERE
THUNDERSTORMS OR EVEN SHOWERS. THE TORNADO FORMED ALONG A WEAK
FRONTAL BOUNDARY AND EXHIBITED THE CLASSIC LANDSPOUT
CHARACTERISTICS OF A LONG, TRANSLUCENT CONDENSATION/DUST FUNNEL.
THE LANDSPOUT MOVED SOUTHWEST ALONG THE BOUNDARY (ANOTHER
LANDSPOUT CHARACTERISTIC) FOR OVER 3 MILES AND WAS WITNESSED BY
SEVERAL PEOPLE. THE MAIN DAMAGE ALONG ITS PATH WAS THE OVERTURNING
OF 11 EMPTY COAL RAILROAD CARS. OTHERWISE, DAMAGE ALONG THE PATH
WAS MINIMAL. THE MAXIMUM WIND SPEED WAS ESTIMATED TO BE 80 MPH
WITH AN EF-SCALE RATING OF EF-0.

THE NWS IN HASTINGS WOULD LIKE TO THANK NUCKOLLS COUNTY EMERGENCY
MANAGEMENT FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE IN COMPLETING THE SURVEY. WE WOULD
ALSO LIKE TO THANK RESIDENTS IN THE AREA FOR SOME VERY HELPFUL
INFORMATION IN DETERMINING THE PATH. FINALLY, PICTURES AND REPORTS
ON SOCIAL MEDIA ALSO PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN DETERMINING ITS PATH.

EF SCALE: THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES
TORNADOES INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES.

EF0...WEAK......65 TO 85 MPH
EF1...WEAK......86 TO 110 MPH
EF2...STRONG....111 TO 135 MPH
EF3...STRONG....136 TO 165 MPH
EF4...VIOLENT...166 TO 200 MPH
EF5...VIOLENT...>200 MPH
