AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CLEVELAND OH
907 PM EST SAT JAN 18 2025

SYNOPSIS

LOW PRESSURE WILL DEVELOP OVER THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS ON
SUNDAY AND MOVE UP THE EAST COAST, PULLING AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT
ACROSS THE AREA IN ITS WAKE. CANADIAN HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD
FROM THE NORTHERN PLAINS TO THE OHIO VALLEY THROUGH THE FIRST
HALF OF NEXT WEEK.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/

900 PM EST UPDATE...
LINGERING PRECIP HAS TAPERED OFF A BIT MORE THAN EXPECTED, SO
DECREASED POPS FOR THE NEXT FEW HOURS. MAINTAINED CHANCE POPS
ACROSS PART OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO SINCE HIGH RES GUIDANCE IS
STILL HINTING AT A BAND OF LIGHT SNOW DOWNWIND FROM LAKE HURON
OVERNIGHT. OTHERWISE, NO MAJOR CHANGES NEEDED WITH THIS UPDATE.

THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW REPORTS OF SLIPPERY CONDITIONS ON PAVEMENT
ACROSS THE EASTERN HALF OF THE AREA DUE TO RAIN/SNOWMELT
FREEZING AS TEMPS RAPIDLY DROP INTO THE 20S. A SPECIAL WEATHER
STATEMENT HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THIS AREA SINCE TRAVEL MAY BE
HAZARDOUS ON SIDEWALKS/ROADWAYS THAT ARE NO LONGER TREATED.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION...
A COLD FRONT EXTENDING FROM LOW PRESSURE OVER NORTHERN QUEBEC
WILL PUSH SOUTHEAST OF THE AREA THIS EVENING. AN AREA OF LIGHT
PRECIPITATION CAN BE SEEN ON RADAR IMAGERY ASSOCIATED WITH
DEEPER MOISTURE ALONG THE FRONT. COLD ADVECTION WILL STRENGTHEN
BEHIND THE FRONT OVER THE NEXT COUPLE HOURS WITH A TRANSITION TO
SNOW AS THE COLUMN COOLS. TEMPERATURES ARE STARTING OFF IN THE
LOWER 30S THIS AFTERNOON SO ACCUMULATIONS WILL BE LIMITED BY THE
WARM BOUNDARY LAYER. LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF AROUND AN INCH WILL
BE POSSIBLE FOR THE HIGHER TERRAIN AND UPSLOPE AREAS OF THE
SNOWBELT THIS EVENING AS WE MOVE PAST SUNSET. SNOW SHOWERS
OVERNIGHT WILL BE LIGHT AND SCATTERED ACROSS PRIMARILY THE
SNOWBELT. WE MAY EVENTUALLY GET BETTER MOISTURE FOCUSED OFF LAKE
HURON BUT IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME FOR ANY BANDS TO GET
ORGANIZED. TEMPERATURES BEHIND THE FRONT FALL INTO THE TEENS
OVERNIGHT AND PATCHES OF SLICK CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE WHERE
WATER FROM THE WET RAIN/SNOW TODAY FREEZE.

SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH MONDAY/

A PERIOD OF VERY COLD CONDITIONS REMAINS ON TRACK TO IMPACT THE
AREA EARLY THIS WEEK AND AN EXTREME COLD WATCH REMAINS IN
EFFECT FROM LATE SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. AFTER
HIGHS IN THE LOW 20S ON SUNDAY, ARCTIC AIR FILTERS INTO THE
REGION ON SUNDAY NIGHT WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING INTO MONDAY.
THE OVERALL MESSAGE REMAINS THE SAME THAT WE WILL EXPERIENCE
DANGEROUSLY COLD CONDITIONS TO START NEXT WEEK (SUN NIGHT TO
WED). WITH THIS IN MIND, TEMPERATURES AND MODEL CONSENSUS FOR
WIND CHILLS HAVE TRENDED JUST A COUPLE DEGREES WARMER THROUGH
MONDAY NIGHT. SUB ZERO WIND CHILLS ARRIVE FROM WEST TO EAST
BEGINNING SUNDAY EVENING INTO MONDAY MORNING. DURING THIS TIME
THE COLDEST CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED MONDAY MORNING WITH
TEMPERATURES IN THE SINGLE DIGITS TO NEAR ZERO AND WESTERLY
WINDS OF 10-15 MPH. THIS RESULTS IN WIND CHILL VALUES RANGING
FROM -5 TO -20 WITH THE COLDEST VALUES NEAR LAKE ERIE. THE WATCH
REMAINS IN EFFECT AS WE CONTINUE TO EVALUATE THE EXTENT AND
SEVERITY OF THE COLD. SEE THE LONG TERM DISCUSSION FOR
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE COLD AND THE CLIMATE SECTION
FOR RECORD LOW VALUES.

WHILE THE LARGER AND MORE WIDESPREAD WINTER-RELATED HAZARD TO START
THE WORK-WEEK WILL BE THE PROLONGED PERIOD OF COLD, THERE WILL BE
SOME SNOW TO GET THROUGH SUNDAY INTO SUNDAY NIGHT. A FEW
DIFFERENT PHASES TO THE SNOW...THE NORTHWESTERN EDGE OF A LARGER
SHIELD OF SYNOPTIC SNOW WILL LIKELY CLIP OUR SOUTHEASTERN
COUNTIES LATE SUNDAY MORNING INTO SUNDAY AFTERNOON. MORE
WIDESPREAD SNOW SHOWERS ARE LIKELY TO SPREAD WEST- EAST ACROSS
OUR ENTIRE FORECAST AREA LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO THE FIRST
HALF OF SUNDAY NIGHT AS A SHORTWAVE AND ITS ASSOCIATED
LIFT/MOISTURE, RAPID COLD AIR ADVECTION AND INCREASING LOW-LEVEL
INSTABILITY, AND FLOW OFF OF LAKE MICHIGAN WORK THROUGH. THE
OTHER ELEMENT WILL BE LAKE-DRIVEN SNOW OFF OF LAKE ERIE,
ESPECIALLY FROM LATE SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH EARLY MONDAY,
LINGERING INTO THE DAY MONDAY UP THE LAKESHORE TOWARDS ERIE.

ANY SYNOPTIC SNOW GRAZING OUR SOUTHEAST COUNTIES THROUGH EARLY
SUNDAY AFTERNOON SHOULD BE LIGHT (NO MORE THAN AN INCH OR SO), BUT
COULD STICK TO UNTREATED SURFACES GIVEN COLD TEMPERATURES. SNOW
SHOWERS SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO THE FIRST HALF OF SUNDAY NIGHT WILL
LIKELY HAVE INTENSITY GIVEN THE SYNOPTIC SUPPORT WITH THE SHORTWAVE,
FLOW OFF LAKE MICHIGAN, AND INCREASING LOW-LEVEL INSTABILITY,
INCLUDING IN THE DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONE. IT'S POSSIBLE WE SEE
MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW SHOWERS WITH QUICK VISIBILITY DROPS TO UNDER
1 MILE AND PERHAPS UNDER 1/2 OF A MILE ANYWHERE SUNDAY AFTERNOON
INTO THE FIRST HALF OF SUNDAY NIGHT, WITH THESE SNOW SHOWERS EASILY
STICKING TO ROADS GIVEN THE COLD. THE GREATEST CONCERN WILL BE FROM
BETWEEN TOLEDO AND FINDLAY ALONG THE I-75 CORRIDOR EAST-SOUTHEAST
ACROSS PARTS OF NORTHWEST AND NORTH CENTRAL OHIO TOWARDS THE
MANSFIELD AREA WHERE UPSLOPE WILL OCCUR, THOUGH SOME SNOW SHOWERS
ARE POSSIBLE ANYWHERE ELSE TOO. MOST WILL SEE UNDER AN INCH OF
ACCUMULATION IN OUR WESTERN AND CENTRAL COUNTIES FROM THIS ACTIVITY,
THOUGH DON'T WANT TO IGNORE THE POTENTIAL FOR TRAVEL IMPACTS ALONG
WITH POTENTIAL FOR LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS IF SNOW SHOWERS PERSIST OR
TRAIN OVER A LOCAL AREA FOR SLIGHTLY LONGER.

REGARDING THE SNOW OFF OF LAKE ERIE...SATELLITE IMAGERY FROM FRIDAY
AND SATELLITE-DERIVED PRODUCTS FROM THIS MORNING SUGGEST THAT THERE
IS NOT ENOUGH ICE EAST OF THE ISLANDS TO HAVE NOTABLE IMPACTS IN
TERMS OF LIMITING THE LAKE EFFECT YET. SOME MODELS MAY BE HANDLING
THAT BETTER THAN OTHERS. WEAK AND SHALLOW LAKE EFFECT SHOULD START
DEVELOPING ON A NORTH-NORTHEAST FLOW LATE TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY
MORNING. A LACK OF SYNOPTIC MOISTURE ABOVE 5K FEET AND INVERSION
HEIGHTS NEAR A SIMILAR LEVEL SHOULD KEEP THIS INITIAL ACTIVITY QUITE
WEAK. BY LATER SUNDAY MORNING AND INTO SUNDAY AFTERNOON, INCREASING
SYNOPTIC MOISTURE AND STRONGER COLD AIR ADVECTION LEADING TO
INCREASING AND DEEPENING INSTABILITY WILL ALLOW LAKE EFFECT TO
INCREASE IN BOTH INTENSITY AND EFFICIENCY AS WINDS GRADUALLY BACK TO
A NORTH AND NORTH-NORTHWEST DIRECTION. IN PARTICULAR, A NORTH-SOUTH
ORIENTED BAND CONNECTED TO LAKE HURON IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP NEAR
CLEVELAND-AKRON SUNDAY MORNING, THEN SLOWLY DRIFT EAST SUNDAY
AFTERNOON INTO SUNDAY EVENING WHILE BECOMING MORE INTENSE. THIS BAND
COULD PRODUCE FLUFFY SNOW RATES TO 1" PER HOUR SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO
SUNDAY EVENING AS IT SLOWLY SWEEPS EAST ACROSS FAR NORTHEAST OH AND
EVENTUALLY NORTHWEST PA. NORTH-FACING HILLIER TERRAIN EAST OF
SANDUSKY-MANSFIELD SHOULD ALSO SEE SOME INCREASE IN AT LEAST LIGHT
UPSLOPE SNOW OUTSIDE OF THE BAND CONNECTED TO LAKE HURON SUNDAY
AFTERNOON INTO EARLY SUNDAY EVENING. THERE MAY BE A BRIEF LULL IN
ACTIVITY FROM WEST TO EAST SUNDAY EVENING BEFORE ANOTHER UPTICK IN
ACTIVITY LATER SUNDAY EVENING THROUGH EARLY MONDAY MORNING. THIS
UPTICK WILL BE DRIVEN BY A DECENT SHORTWAVE PASSAGE, INCREASING
MOISTURE FROM LAKE MICHIGAN, AND INCREASING CONVERGENCE ALONG THE
EASTERN SHORELINE AS FLOW BACKS TO A MORE WESTERLY DIRECTION AND AS
TEMPERATURES ON LAND PLUMMET. THIS UPTICK COULD DEVELOP AS FAR
SOUTH/WEST AS THE CLEVELAND METRO AND SECONDARY SNOWBELT BEFORE
FOCUSING INTO THE PRIMARY SNOWBELT EAST OF CLEVELAND BY EARLY
MONDAY. HEADING INTO MONDAY ACTIVITY WILL GRADUALLY SHIFT UP THE
LAKESHORE AND EVENTUALLY SHIFT OFFSHORE, THOUGH MAY TAKE A GOOD
PORTION OF THE DAY TO CLEAR ERIE COUNTY, PA. CONDITIONS REMAIN QUITE
CONDUCIVE FOR MODERATE TO HEAVY, EFFICIENT LAKE EFFECT WITHIN BANDS
THROUGH THE FIRST HALF OF SUNDAY NIGHT. DRY AIR AND AND THE
DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONE LOWERING BENEATH OUR FEET FROM THE SOUTHWEST
LATER SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING WILL GRADUALLY LEAD TO LAKE
EFFECT BECOMING LESS INTENSE AND EFFICIENT, THOUGH AGAIN THIS MAY
TAKE A GOOD PORTION OF THE DAY MONDAY TO HAPPEN TOWARDS ERIE, PA.

ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR ERIE COUNTY, PA FROM 4 PM SUNDAY
THROUGH 4 PM MONDAY GIVEN AN INITIAL WINDOW OF BETTER SNOW POTENTIAL
SUNDAY EVENING FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER DECENT WINDOW LATE SUNDAY NIGHT
INTO MONDAY BEFORE ACTIVITY LIFTS OVER THE LAKE. POTENTIAL IS HIGH
ENOUGH FOR SOME 6-10" AMOUNTS TO GO WITH A WATCH, AND ALLOW A FUTURE
SHIFT TO MAKE AN ADVISORY VS WARNING DECISION (THE CURRENT FORECAST
WOULD MARGINALLY SUPPORT A WARNING). ISSUED AN ADVISORY FOR CRAWFORD
PA FROM 4 PM SUNDAY - 10 AM MONDAY, WITH THE EXPECTATION THAT SNOW
WILL LIFT OUT OF CRAWFORD QUICKER AND KEEP AMOUNTS BELOW WARNING
CRITERIA. ALSO WENT WITH AN ADVISORY FROM 10 AM SUNDAY TO 10 AM
MONDAY FOR CUYAHOGA, LAKE, GEAUGA, AND ASHTABULA COUNTIES IN OH.
BETWEEN AN INITIAL PERIOD OF BETTER LAKE SNOW WITH THE LAKE HURON
CONNECTED BAND ON SUNDAY AND ANOTHER UPTICK SUNDAY NIGHT AS FLOW
BACKS MORE WESTERLY, FEEL GOOD ABOUT PORTIONS OF THESE COUNTIES
SEEING 3 TO 6". SOME GUIDANCE SUGGEST LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS ARE
POSSIBLE IF THE LAKE HURON CONNECTION IS INTENSE ENOUGH SUNDAY
AFTERNOON, BUT THIS SIGNAL WAS TOO WEAK TO GO ANY HIGHER WITH
AMOUNTS. WILL NEED TO EVALUATE ALL COUNTIES SURROUNDING THE CURRENT
ADVISORY (LORAIN, MEDINA, SUMMIT, PORTAGE, AND POSSIBLY TRUMBULL) AS
WELL. THE LAKE HURON BAND COULD EXTEND INTO SUMMIT OR PORTAGE FOR A
GOOD FEW HOURS ON SUNDAY, AND THE NEXT UPTICK SUNDAY NIGHT MAY ALSO
IMPACT LORAIN ALONG WITH NORTHERN PORTIONS OF MEDINA, SUMMIT,
PORTAGE, AND TRUMBULL. THE CURRENT FORECAST DOESN'T SUPPORT
HEADLINES IN THESE COUNTIES, THOUGH WILL CONTINUE EVALUATING,
ESPECIALLY IF THE LAKE HURON BAND LOOKS TO SIT IN SUMMIT/PORTAGE FOR
A DECENT LENGTH OF TIME ON SUNDAY. LAKE EFFECT OR ENHANCED SNOW
SHOWERS OFF OF LAKE ERIE WILL GET INTO STARK AND MAHONING FOR A TIME
SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO THE EARLY EVENING AS WELL...DON'T EXPECT US TO
NEED HEADLINES THERE, BUT IT WILL BE COLD SO ANY SNOW (THINKING 1 TO
3" IN THESE COUNTIES) WILL STICK TO ALL SURFACES AND COULD IMPACT
TRAVEL AT TIMES SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO THE FIRST HALF OF SUNDAY
NIGHT.

LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/

A MASSIVE UPPER TROUGH WILL CARVE OUT ACROSS ALMOST THE ENTIRE CONUS
EARLY NEXT WEEK WHICH WILL BRING DOWN THE ARCTIC EXPRESS WITH A
FRIGID AIRMASS. THE LOW LEVEL FLOW AND THE COLD AIR ADVECTION WILL
BE FROM A WESTERLY COMPONENT MONDAY NIGHT. THE 850 MB TEMPERATURES
WILL FALL TO AROUND -25C OR SLIGHTLY COLDER BY MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH
WEDNESDAY MORNING BEFORE THE CORE OF THIS ARCTIC BLASTS STARTS TO
LOOSEN ITS EXTREME FREEZE ON THE CONUS LATER IN THE WEEK. THERE
WILL BE ONGOING LAKE EFFECT SNOW AND SQUALLS MONDAY NIGHT COMING OFF
LAKE ERIE WITH THOSE FRIGID WESTERLY WINDS MAINLY FOR THE PRIMARY
SNOWBELT OF FAR NEOH INTO NWPA. THIS LAKE EFFECT EVENT AND SETUP
WILL BEGIN TO SLOWLY DECREASE IN SCOPE AND INTENSITY BY MONDAY NIGHT
BUT CONTINUE TO KEEP GOING THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING OR EARLY WEDNESDAY
MORNING. A COUPLE MORE INCHES OF LAKE EFFECT SNOWFALL IS LIKELY
MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT FOR AREAS CLOSER TO THE LAKESHORE
OF ASHTABULA AND ERIE COUNTY PA.

ELSEWHERE ACROSS NORTHERN OHIO, IT WILL BE QUIET WEATHER BUT VERY
COLD! MONDAY NIGHT'S LOW TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM -5F TO 0F.
WIND CHILL VALUES WILL RANGE FROM -10F O -15F MONDAY NIGHT INTO
TUESDAY MORNING. HIGH TEMPERATURES ON TUESDAY WILL BE STUCK IN THE
SINGLE DIGITS WITH A COUPLE LOCATIONS MAYBE REACHING 10F. TUESDAY
NIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING WILL LIKELY BE OUR COLDEST
WEATHER WE HAVE SEEN YET THIS WINTER SEASON AND IN QUITE SOME TIME
WHEN THE CORE OF ARCTIC AIRMASS MOVES OVER THE REGION. LOW
TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM -7F TO -14F. THE WIND CHILL VALUES WILL
BOTTOM OUT BETWEEN -15F TO -24F TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY
MORNING.

THE SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE OF THIS ARCTIC AIRMASS WILL START TO PULL
AWAY TOWARDS THE EAST COAST ON WEDNESDAY. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL
STILL BE VERY COLD FROM 6F TO 13F ON WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. A
SOUTHERLY TO SOUTHWESTERLY FLOW WILL RETURN LATE WEDNESDAY BUT
MORE SO ON THURSDAY. TEMPERATURES WILL ALSO SLOWLY MODERATE TOWARDS
THE END OF NEXT WEEK. A WEEK TROUGH MAY MOVE ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES
AND OHIO VALLEY REGION LATE NEXT WEEK SOME VERY LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS
CHANCES BUT IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO HAVE ALOT OF MOISTURE OR MUCH
IMPACTS AT THIS TIME.

AVIATION /00Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/

SNOW HAS ENDED IN MOST LOCATIONS, BUT LOWER (MOSTLY MVFR) CEILINGS
IN LAKE EFFECT CLOUDS WILL GENERALLY PERSIST THROUGH TONIGHT.
THE ONLY EXCEPTION WILL BE KTOL, WHERE VFR WILL LIKELY DEVELOP
TONIGHT AND CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING/EARLY AFTERNOON.
ADDITIONAL SNOW SHOWERS WILL LIFT INTO THE EASTERN HALF OF THE
AREA (EAST OF KTOL/KFDY AND POSSIBLY KMFD) SUNDAY MORNING
BEFORE A TRANSITION TO LAKE EFFECT SNOW SHOWERS OCCURS SUNDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING. SNOW WILL LIKELY PRODUCE
MVFR/IFR CEILINGS/VISIBILITY, BUT CAN'T RULE OUT PERIODS OF LIFR
IN MODERATE BURSTS OF SNOW AT KCLE/KCAK/KYNG/KERI, BUT OPTED TO
CAP CONDITIONS AT IFR SINCE THERE IS UNCERTAINTY IN WHERE THE
HEAVIEST BAND(S) OF SNOW WILL SET UP ON SUNDAY.

WINDS WILL BE OUT OF THE NORTH AT 6 TO 10 KNOTS WITH A FEW
GUSTS TO 20 KNOTS TONIGHT BEFORE BECOMING MORE NORTHWESTERLY AND
INCREASING SLIGHTLY ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

OUTLOOK...NON-VFR EXPECTED IN PERIODIC SNOW SHOWERS ACROSS NE
OHIO AND NW PENNSYLVANIA ON SUNDAY NIGHT, BECOMING CONFINED TO
MAINLY ERI BY MONDAY. NON VFR CEILINGS AT TIMES THROUGH TUESDAY.

MARINE

AN ARCTIC FRONT JUST CLEARED ACROSS LAKE ERIE THIS AFTERNOON WITH
NORTHERLY WINDS 15 TO 25 KNOTS INTO THIS EVENING. THERE IS A SMALL
CRAFT ADVISORY FOR PARTS OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN NEARSHORE WATER
THROUGH THIS EVENING BEFORE THE WINDS AND WAVES BECOME LIGHTER. THE
MAIN STORY WILL BE THE ARCTIC COLD SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY,
LEADING TO RAPID ICE EXPANSION AND HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY IN ANY ICE-
FREE WATERS AS WESTERLY WINDS INCREASE TO 15-25 KNOTS SUNDAY EVENING
AND BECOME SOUTHWESTERLY 20 TO 30 KNOTS MONDAY. THE SOUTHWEST WINDS
OF 15-25 KNOTS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THURSDAY.

THE HIGHEST POTENTIAL FOR HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY WILL BE SUNDAY NIGHT
THROUGH TUESDAY EVENING. A HEAVY FREEZING SPRAY WATCH HAS BEEN
ISSUED FOR PORTIONS OF THE CENTRAL AND EASTERN BASINS OF LAKE
ERIE.

CLIMATE

ARCTIC AIR WILL ARRIVE EARLY MONDAY MORNING 1/20, AND PERSIST
THROUGH WEDNESDAY 1/22. THE COLDEST PERIOD IS EXPECTED TO BE
LATE TUESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH CURRENT
FORECAST TEMPERATURES APPROACHING RECORD LOWS FOR 1/22. BELOW
ARE THE CURRENT RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES FOR 1/20-22.
