AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GRAND FORKS ND
601 PM CST SAT JAN 25 2025

KEY MESSAGES

- WINDY CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED BOTH SUNDAY AND MONDAY, WITH
MINOR IMPACTS TO TRAVEL POSSIBLE DUE TO DRIFTING SNOW.

UPDATE

ISSUED AT 538 PM CST SAT JAN 25 2025

THE STREAMERS TO THE EAST OF THE RRV ARE SLOWLY FADING, AND
SHOULD DISSIPATE WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR OR SO. WILL LET THE WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY EXPIRE AT 6 PM. LOOKING UPSTREAM, THERE ARE
SOME MID LEVEL CLOUDS ALONG AND JUST NORTH OF THE CANADIAN
BORDER. IT APPEARS THESE WILL DRIFT SOUTHEAST AND PRIMARILY
AFFECT THE NORTHERN HALF OF THE FA DURING THE EVENING.
OTHERWISE, WIND SPEEDS SHOULD DECREASE, BUT ONLY GET SO FAR
BEFORE THEY STEADY OFF AGAIN. GUSTY CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED
MAINLY WEST OF THE RRV BY MID TO LATE SUNDAY MORNING AND THROUGH
THE AFTERNOON. THIS SHOULD PRODUCE MORE BLOWING AND DRIFTING
SNOW (MAINLY DRIFTING), WHICH WHEN CROSSING SURFACES, COULD LEAD
TO MORE SLIPPERY SPOTS (BLOW ICE). WENT AHEAD AND ADDED THE
MENTION OF BLOWING SNOW THROUGH SUNDAY AND ON INTO MONDAY AS
WELL.

DISCUSSION

ISSUED AT 109 PM CST SAT JAN 25 2025

..SYNOPSIS

SYNOPTICALLY SPEAKING, NOT MUCH IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE THROUGH
THE WORK WEEK. NORTHWESTERLY FLOW WILL INTENSIFY INTO A PRETTY
STRONG JET ACROSS MUCH OF THE GREAT LAKES REGION OF THE UNITED
STATES. THIS LEAVES US ON THE PERIPHERY OF PERIODIC SHORTWAVES
WITH LIGHT SNOW CHANCES BUT MAINLY WILL SEE US WARM UP
DRAMATICALLY THROUGH THE WEEK. WITH THE INCREASING TEMPERATURES
TO NEAR OR ABOVE FREEZING, FOG AND STRATUS WILL LIKELY BECOME AN
ISSUE THROUGH THE WORK WEEK. ADDITIONALLY, WITH THE WARMING
TEMPERATURES THROUGH THE DAY AND POTENTIAL REFREEZE OVERNIGHT,
BLOW ICE COULD BECOME A CONCERN.

..BLOWING SNOW TODAY

GUSTY WINDS THIS AFTERNOON HAVE CREATED ONGOING BLOWING SNOW
HCRS WITH PERIODIC FALLING SNOW EMBEDDED WITHIN. VISIBILITIES
HAVE IMPROVED THROUGH THE MORNING AND PRESSURE GRADIENT AND
925MB WINDS HAVE DIMINISHED FOR THE MOST PART. FOR THE MOST
PART, THESE HCRS ARE MORE CONDENSED ON THE MINNESOTA SIDE. THE
NORTH DAKOTA SIDE HAS SEEN SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS IN
VISIBILITY AND FOR THAT REASON HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY. WITH THE MORE ORGANIZATION OF HCRS ON THE
MINNESOTA SIDE, THE ADVISORY HAS BEEN EXPANDED DOWN VALLEY AND
WILL CONTINUE UNTIL 6 PM WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS WILL DIMINISH TO
BELOW 15 KNOTS, THEREBY IMPROVING CONDITIONS.

AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z MONDAY/

ISSUED AT 538 PM CST SAT JAN 25 2025

OVERALL, FEW IMPACTS ARE EXPECTED FOR THE FIRST 12 HOURS OF THE
TAFS. HOWEVER, BY SUNDAY MORNING, EXPECT WESTERLY WINDS TO
BEGIN TO PICK UP AGAIN, ESPECIALLY TO THE WEST OF THE RRV. THIS
SHOULD PRODUCE MORE BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW. AT THIS POINT,
NOT SURE IT WILL BE LOFTED ENOUGH TO PRODUCE BLSN, BUT IT SHOULD
AT LEAST PRODUCE SOME DRSN AT KDVL/KGFK/KFAR. WIND SPEEDS JUST
OFF THE SURFACE LAYER WILL BE EVEN STRONGER, WITH SOME LLWS
POSSIBLE SUNDAY MORNING AS WELL. NOT CONFIDENT THERE WILL BE
BLOWING SNOW STREAMERS AGAIN ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, SO LEFT THAT
MENTION OUT.
