DISCUSSION

ISSUED AT 420 AM CST SUN DEC 15 2024

WIDESPREAD FREEZING FOG HAS DEVELOPED ACROSS THE REGION,
LEAVING THE POTENTIAL FOR SLICK SURFACES AS PEOPLE HEAD OUT THE
DOOR THIS MORNING. VISIBILITIES OF ONE QUARTER MILE TO ONE MILE
HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS THE AREA ADDING TO THE POTENTIAL FOR
HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS THIS MORNING. A DENSE FOG ADVISORY
CONTINUES FOR ALL OF OUR COUNTIES EXCEPT DAWSON, GOSPER AND
FURNAS (IN NEBRASKA) UNTIL 8AM. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL THIS MORNING,
TAKE CARE TO SLOW DOWN AND PREPARE FOR RAPIDLY CHANGING
VISIBILITIES.

HEADING INTO THE AFTERNOON, CLOUDS ARE EXPECTED TO DECREASE,
BECOMING PARTLY CLOUDY. AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO WARM
UP NICELY, TOPPING OUT IN THE MID TO UPPER 40S FOR MUCH OF SOUTH
CENTRAL NEBRASKA. NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS AND THE WESTERN HALF OF
DAWSON, GOSPER AND FURNAS COUNTIES CAN EXPECT HIGHS TO REACH INTO
THE 50S.

OVERNIGHT, THE NAMNEST SHOWS THE POTENTIAL FOR SOME FOG
DEVELOPMENT, BUT APPEARS TO BE AN OUTLIER FOR NOW COMPARED TO OTHER
MODELS. ADDITIONALLY, DOWNSLOPE WINDS WILL NOT BE CONDUCIVE FOR FOG
DEVELOPMENT, PARTICULARLY AS THEY ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE
OVERNIGHT. LOW TEMPERATURES BY MONDAY MORNING WILL RANGE FROM THE
MID TO UPPER 20S FOR AREAS ALONG AND WEST OF A LINE FROM SMITH
CENTER TO YORK. AREAS SOUTH AND EAST OF THIS LINE WILL DIP INTO THE
LOW 30S.

HEADING INTO MONDAY, WE START AN ACTIVE PERIOD WITH MULTIPLE UPPER
LEVEL TROUGHS MOVING THROUGH THE REGION. THE FIRST WILL PUSH THROUGH
BY DAYBREAK, WITH NORTHWEST FLOW TRANSITIONING TO WEST-NORTHWEST
FLOW BY THE EVENING. EXPECT A WARM UP WITH HIGHS RANGING FROM THE
UPPER 40S TO LOW 50S. THERE WILL BE A BRIEF PERIOD IN THE AFTERNOON
WHERE ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS MAY BE POSSIBLE ACROSS
PORTIONS OF GOSPER, DAWSON, BUFFALO, SHERMAN, VALLEY, HOWARD AND
GREELEY COUNTIES IN NEBRASKA. WIND GUSTS MAY APPROACH 20-30MPH WITH
RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES IN THE MID-20S TO LOW 30S. FIRE WEATHER
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO BE MINIMAL AT BEST.

THE ABOVE SEASONAL TEMPERATURES CONTINUE INTO TUESDAY AS ANOTHER
UPPER LEVEL TROUGH MOVES THROUGH THE REGION. AT THE MOMENT,
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN DRY ACROSS THE HASTINGS CWA DUE TO
MOISTURE FROM THE PACNW NOT MAKING IT DOWN THIS FAR. SHOULD THE
TRACK OF THIS SYSTEM SHIFT A LITTLE FURTHER SOUTH, A FEW FLURRIES OR
SPRINKLES MAY BE POSSIBLE. WEDNESDAY MORNING WILL BE A COLD ONE WITH
LOWS IN THE TEENS AND LOW 20S. WIND CHILL VALUES ARE CURRENTLY
FORECASTED TO RANGE FROM AROUND THREE DEGREES ABOVE ZERO TO 11
DEGREES.

COOLER TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED THROUGH THE DAYS, WITH EXPECTED
HIGHS IN THE 30S FOR AREAS ALONG AND WEST OF A LINE FROM KEARNEY,
NEBRASKA TO MANKATO, KANSAS. AREAS WEST OF THIS LINE WILL STRUGGLE
INTO THE LOW 40S.

THE COOLDOWN WILL BE SHORT-LIVED AS NORTHWEST FLOW SETS UP OVER THE
MIDDLE OF THE NATION ON THURSDAY. HIGHS WILL RANGE FROM THE MID-40S
IN THE EAST TO THE MID-50S IN THE WEST. ANOTHER COOL DOWN COMES
FRIDAY, WITH DRY CONDITIONS EXPECTED. FRIDAY MORNING LOWS WILL BE IN
THE UPPER TEENS TO MID-20S. HIGHS WILL BE MAINLY IN THE 30S AND
40S.
