DISCUSSION

ISSUED AT 429 AM CST SAT JAN 25 2025

A FEW FLURRIES CONTINUE TO IMPACT PORTIONS OF THE REGION THIS
MORNING. THESE ARE EXPECTED TO DIMINISH BY SUNRISE. STARTING OUT THE
DAY, ZONAL FLOW IS IN PLACE OVER THE HIGH PLAINS/CENTRAL HIGH
PLAINS. AN UPPER TROUGH IS SITUATED OVER CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. AS
THE DAY PROGRESSES, A MID-LEVEL LOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP IN
CALIFORNIA. WINDS WILL INCREASE BEHIND A COLD FRONT MOVING
ACROSS THE CENTER OF THE NATION TODAY. COLDER AIR WILL ADVECT
INTO THE REGION THROUGH THE DAY, BRINGING A NOTICEABLE
DIFFERENCE IN TEMPERATURES FROM YESTERDAY. EXPECTED HIGHS WILL
BE MAINLY IN THE 30S. LOWS WILL BE IN THE SINGLE DIGITS ALONG
AND NORTHWEST OF A LINE FROM ORD TO GOTHENBURG. EVERYONE ELSE
WILL FALL INTO THE TEENS BY SUNDAY MORNING. THE COOLER
TEMPERATURES WILL SETTLE IN ON SUNDAY, WITH HIGHS ONCE AGAIN
AROUND NORMAL (MID-30S) AND LOWS IN THE MID- TEENS TO LOW 20S.

MONDAY, SPLIT FLOW WILL RESULT IN NORTHWEST FLOW OVER NEBRASKA, A
CLOSED LOW OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, AND A RIDGE OVER THE PAC NW.
THIS WILL LEAD TO PLEASANT CONDITIONS FOR MONDAY AND TUESDAY.
WESTERLY WINDS WILL BE AROUND 5-15MPH EACH DAY WITH WARM AIR
ADVECTING INTO THE REGION. EXPECT HIGH TEMPERATURES TO BE IN THE
UPPER 40S TO MID-50S EACH DAY. LOWS WILL BE MAINLY IN THE 20S.

THE MILD, BUT SLIGHTLY COOLER TEMPERATURES WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE
REST OF THE FORECAST PERIOD, WITH HIGHS IN THE 40S AND LOWS IN THE
20S. DRY CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST THROUGH THURSDAY
MORNING. HEADING INTO THURSDAY AFTERNOON, THE CLOSED LOW WILL MOVE
ACROSS THE ARIZONA/NEW MEXICO/MEXICO BORDER, TAPPING INTO GULF
MOISTURE. AS EARLY AS THURSDAY AFTERNOON, THERE IS A SMALL CHANCE
(LESS THAN 20%) OF RECEIVING A RAIN SHOWER IN OUR NORTHERN KANSAS
COUNTIES. CHANCES WILL INCREASE TO AROUND 20-30% IN NORTH CENTRAL
KANSAS OVERNIGHT.

FRIDAY, THE CLOSED LOW WILL LIFT TO THE NORTHEAST, INTO THE OKLAHOMA
PANHANDLE. THERE IS STILL CONSIDERABLE DISAGREEMENT OVER THE TRACK
OF THE SYSTEM ONCE IT BEGINS MOVING INTO TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA. THE
ECMWF KEEPS THE UPPER LOW FURTHER SOUTH AND EAST THAN THE GFS,
BRINGING IT THROUGH TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT. THE
GFS BRINGS THE LOW ACROSS WESTERN KANSAS AND RIGHT OVER CENTRAL
NEBRASKA BY EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. TEMPERATURES FRIDAY WILL BE WARM
ENOUGH WHERE PRECIPITATION WILL FALL AS RAIN. HOWEVER, TEMPERATURES
IN THE 30S ON SATURDAY COULD RESULT IN RAIN OR A RAIN/SNOW MIX. THIS
WILL BE SOMETHING TO CONTINUE TO MONITOR OVER THE COMING DAYS.
