DISCUSSION

ISSUED AT 223 AM CST MON JAN 20 2025

A LONGWAVE TROUGH CONTINUES TO IMPACT THE CONUS WITH VERY COLD AIR
LINGERING ACROSS THE CENTRAL PLAINS. WE CONTINUE TO SEE SUPPORT FOR
A PERIOD OF LIGHT SNOW ACROSS MUCH OF THE AREA TODAY. STEEP LOW
LEVEL LAPSE RATES ARE PROGGED THIS AFTERNOON WITH SOME DECENT LIFT
THROUGH THE DENDRITIC SNOW GROWTH ZONE SUPPORTING A PERIOD OF
EFFICIENT SNOWFALL. ALTHOUGH PRECIPITATION AMOUNTS ARE EXPECTED TO
REMAIN LIGHT, HIGH SLRS COULD BRING A FEW LOCATIONS CLOSE TO 2
INCHES BEFORE IT WRAPS UP LATE THIS AFTERNOON OR EARLY THIS EVENING
IN SOUTH CENTRAL KS.

ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD SOUTHWARD TONIGHT IN THE WAKE OF THE
LIGHT SNOW EVENT. STRONG RADIATIONAL COOLING IS ANTICIPATED,
ESPECIALLY IN AREAS WITH FRESH SNOWFALL WITH LOWS FALLING INTO THE 5
TO 10 BELOW RANGE. EVEN WITH LIGHT WINDS, WIND CHILL VALUES WILL
DROP INTO THE THE 10 TO 20 BELOW RANGE AND A COLD WEATHER ADVISORY
WILL BE ISSUED FOR MUCH OF THE AREA TONIGHT AND TUE MORNING. BREEZY
SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL ALLOW TEMPERATURES TO MODERATE ON TUE WITH MOST
AREAS SEEING HIGHS IN THE MID AND UPPER 20S.

WED THROUGH THE WEEKEND...A CLIPPER SYSTEM IS PROGGED TO DIG ACROSS
THE NORTHERN PLAINS ON WED DRIVING A COLD FRONT SOUTH OVER THE AREA
LATE IN THE PERIOD. THIS FRONT WILL KEEP SOME COOLER AIR IN PLACE
ACROSS THE AREA ON THU WITH HIGHS MOSTLY IN THE 30S. RISING HEIGHTS
AND INCREASING THICKNESS WILL SUPPORT RISING TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE
AREA ON FRIDAY BUT ANOTHER FRONTAL PASSAGE WILL ARRIVE ON SAT AS A
TROUGH DEEPENS ACROSS THE CENTRAL GREAT BASIN AREA. A WIDE RANGE OF
TEMPERATURES IS POSSIBLE ON SAT WITH SOUTHEAST KS SEEING HIGHS IN
THE 50S WHILE CENTRAL KS TOPS OUT IN THE 30S. THIS FRONT MAY
REINFORCE SEASONABLE AIR ACROSS THE AREA ON SUNDAY WITH HIGHS IN THE
30S/LOWS IN THE TEENS AND 20S. THE CHANCE FOR MEANINGFUL
PRECIPITATION APPEARS LOW THROUGH THE PERIOD.

AVIATION /12Z TAFS THROUGH 12Z TUESDAY/

ISSUED AT 1059 AM CST MON JAN 20 2025

LIGHT SNOW CONTINUES TO PROGRESS ACROSS PORTIONS OF CENTRAL AND
SOUTH-CENTRAL KANSAS. BASED ON OBSERVATIONS, IT APPEARS AS
THOUGH SNOW HAS COME TO AN END ALONG AND NORTH OF THE I-70
CORRIDOR. AREAS ALONG AND SOUTH OF A KGBD-KEMP LINE SHOULD
CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE LIGHT SNOW THROUGH THE EARLY AFTERNOON
HOURS. MVFR CIGS AND IFR TO LIFR VIS CATS WILL LIKELY ACCOMPANY
PERIODS OF LIGHT SNOW THIS AFTERNOON. AFTER 00Z THIS EVENING,
SNOW CHANCES WILL COME TO AN END ACROSS THE AREA, AND VFR
CONDITIONS WILL COMMENCE.

NORTHERLY/NORTHEASTERLY WINDS SHOULD GRADUALLY DECREASE AND
BECOME LIGHT AND VARIABLE TONIGHT AS A SURFACE RIDGE SLIDES INTO
THE AREA. THIS RIDGE WILL CONTINUE MOVING EASTWARD TUESDAY
MORNING, AND SOUTHWEST WINDS SHOULD INCREASE FROM WEST TO EAST
THROUGHOUT THE LATE MORNING/EARLY AFTERNOON ON TUESDAY.
