..NWS DAMAGE SURVEY FOR 5/6 - 5/7 TORNADO EVENT UPDATE #1  
 
   
UPDATE  
REVIEW OF AVAILABLE SENTINEL 2 SATELLITE IMAGERY  
REVEALED SEVERAL SUBSTANTIAL CHANGES TO THE TORNADOES FOR THE  
EVENING OF MAY 6TH AND THE MORNING OF MAY 7TH ACROSS SOUTHEAST  
MISSISSIPPI INTO SOUTHWEST ALABAMA. THIS INCLUDES TWO ADDITIONAL  
IDENTIFIED TORNADOES IN CORROBORATION WITH RADAR TORNADO DEBRIS  
SIGNATURES, AS WELL AS UPDATES TO THE TWO TORNADOES THAT WERE  
ALREADY CONFIRMED. DETAILS ON THESE CAN BE FOUND BELOW.

SURVEY SUMMARY:  
PRELIMINARY GROUND SURVEY CONFIRMS EF1 DAMAGE BEGINNING ALONG US  
HIGHWAY 98 BETWEEN NEW AUGUSTA AND BEAUMONT, WITH MULTIPLE AREAS  
OF SOFTWOOD AND HARDWOOD TREES SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. TWO  
CONCENTRATED AREAS OF TREE DAMAGE WERE NOTED ALONG US HIGHWAY 98,  
SUGGESTING MULTIPLE SUBVORTICES WITHIN A BROADER CIRCULATION. THE  
MAXIMUM INTENSITY OCCURRED AROUND US HIGHWAY 98 WITH WINDS AROUND  
100 MPH. THE TORNADO CONTINUED GENERALLY EASTWARD, CROSSING  
HIGHWAY 198 AND TRACKING ALONG OR NEAR V L TOUSSAINT BLVD BEFORE  
WEAKENING OVER THE NORTH SIDE OF BEAUMONT. FARTHER SOUTHWEST,  
SPORADIC TREE DAMAGE WAS ALSO OBSERVED ALONG HIGHWAY 29 SOUTH OF  
NEW AUGUSTA. SATELLITE DATA WILL BE EXAMINED OVER THE COMING WEEKS  
TO DETERMINE THE STARTING POINT FOR THE TORNADO, AS RADAR  
SUGGESTS THAT IT LIKELY FORMED OVER A WOODED AREA SOUTHWEST OF NEW  
AUGUSTA. FURTHER TRACK ADJUSTMENTS ARE LIKELY ONCE SATELLITE DATA  
IS AVAILABLE.  
 
AFTER REVIEW OF AVAILABLE SENTINEL 2 SATELLITE IMAGERY THE  
TORNADO TRACK HAD MAJOR CHANGES TO ITS BEGINNING AND END POINTS,  
WIDTH, AND INTENSITY. THE TORNADO WAS FOUND TO HAVE BEGAN MUCH  
FURTHER WEST TO THE WEST OF HIGHWAY 29 AND JUST NORTH OF RED HILL  
ROAD. THE TORNADO TRAVERSED FOREST UPROOTING AND SNAPPING TREES  
ALONG ITS PATH, REACHING A PEAK INTENSITY NORTH OF RED HILL ROAD  
WHERE A LARGE SECTION OF FOREST SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE. HERE  
WIND SPEEDS WERE LIKELY IN THE 100 TO 110MPH RANGE. THE TORNADO  
EVOLVED INTO A MULTI-VORTEX EVIDENT BY SEVERAL NOTABLE CORRIDORS  
OF TREE DAMAGE ALONG THE MAIN TORNADO TRACK. THE TORNADO CONTINUED  
EAST OF HIGHWAY 29 GRADUALLY SHRINKING IN SIZE AND WEAKENING.  
DURING THIS PERIOD IT DROPPED SOUTHEAST A BIT ALONG FS ROAD 312 A.  
THE TORNADO BEGAN TO RE- INTENSIFY AS FOREST DAMAGE BECAME MORE  
NOTICEABLE UNTIL REACHING HIGHWAY 98 WHERE GROUND SURVEY CREW  
ASSESSED DAMAGE. SATELLITE IMAGERY SUPPORTED THE TORNADO BEING  
MULTI-VORTEX AS SEVERAL FOCUSED CORRIDORS OF DAMAGE BECAME EVIDENT  
AS IT CROSSED HIGHWAY 98, CONSISTENT WITH GROUND SURVEY  
ASSESSMENTS. AFTE THE GROUND SURVEY END POINT, THE TORNADO DID  
CONTINUE INTO THE FOREST CAUSING FOREST DAMAGE ACROSS HORSESHOE  
BEND LAKE. IT THEN REACHED THE LEAF RIVER WHERE THE LAST EVIDENCE  
OF FOREST DAMAGE ASSOCIATED WITH THE TORNADO WAS VISIBLE ON  
SENTINEL 2 SATELLITE IMAGERY. THIS IS THE ESTIMATED END POINT FOR  
THE TORNADO. THE TORNADO WIDTH WAS ALSO UPDATED TO BE  
APPROXIMATELY 700 YARDS WIDE. ADDITIONAL ADJUSTMENTS ARE POSSIBLE  
LATER AS HIGH- RESOLUTION SATELLITE IMAGERY BECOMES AVAILABLE OVER  
THE NEXT MONTH.

SURVEY SUMMARY:  
AFTER REVIEW OF AVAILABLE MEDIUM TO HIGH RESOLUTION SATELLITE  
IMAGERY, IT WAS DETERMINED AN EF1 TORNADO OCCURRED NEAR JONATHAN.  
THIS TORNADO BEGAN SOUTHWEST OF HIGHWAY 63 WHERE IT BEGAN CAUSING  
INTERMITTENT TREE DAMAGE ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE FOREST. AFTER  
CROSSING HIGHWAY 63, IT MOVED INTO SOME OPEN FIELDS WHERE IT  
CONTINUED TO CAUSE TREE DAMAGE IN A FOCUSED CORRIDOR. THE TORNADO  
STRENGTHENED ON APPROACH TO JONATHAN ROAD WHERE A MORE PERSISTENT  
CORRIDOR OF TREE DAMAGE WAS ABLE TO BE OBSERVED. THE TORNADO  
CONTINUED NORTHEAST ACROSS JONATHAN ROAD, REACHING ITS PEAK  
INTENSITY AROUND 90MPH JUST NORTHWEST OF ALBERT SMITH ROAD WHERE  
A CORRIDOR OF MORE SUBSTANTIAL TREEFALL WAS EVIDENT ON SATELLITE  
IMAGERY. THE DAMAGE PATH BECOMES INTERMITTENT AFTER THIS POINT,  
WITH THE LAST VISIBLE TREE DAMAGE EAST OF THE ALBERT SMITH ROAD  
AND OLD AVERA ROAD INTERSECTION. THIS IS ALSO WHERE THE RADAR  
TORNADO DEBRIS SIGNATURE DISSIPATES, AND NO FURTHER DAMAGE IS  
EVIDENT FURTHER EAST VIA SATELLITE IMAGERY. ADJUSTMENTS TO THE  
TORNADO ARE POSSIBLE LATER AS HIGH-RESOLUTION SATELLITE IMAGERY  
BECOMES AVAILABLE OVER THE NEXT MONTH.

SURVEY SUMMARY:  
PRELIMINARY GROUND SURVEY CONFIRMS LOW END EF1 DAMAGE NORTHEAST  
OF GRAND BAY, ALABAMA. MAXIMUM INTENSITY OF 88 MPH WAS FOUND ON  
JIM MCNEIL LOOP ROAD WHERE SEVERAL LARGE TREE LIMBS WERE DOWN  
OVER A COMPACT AREA. THE TORNADO TRACKED SOUTHEAST AND PRODUCED  
SPORADIC DAMAGE ON DEDICATED ROAD WHERE A HORSE TRAILER WAS  
FLIPPED AND MORE TREES WERE DAMAGED. AFTER PASSING OVER OLD  
PASCAGOULA ROAD, ADDITIONAL TREE DAMAGE WITH DOWNED LIMBS AND  
SNAPPED TREES WERE FOUND ON WELLS ROAD WEST. SATELLITE DATA WILL  
BE EXAMINED IN THE COMING WEEKS TO CONFIRM THE STARTING POINT OF  
THE TORNADO, WHICH IS LIKELY FURTHER TO THE NORTHWEST IN WOODED  
AREAS OVER JACKSON CREEK EAST OF GRAND BAY WILMER ROAD.  
 
AFTER REVIEW OF AVAILABLE SENTINEL 2 SATELLITE IMAGERY, THE  
BEGINNING AND END POINTS OF THE TORNADO HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED TO  
REFLECT A NARROW CORRIDOR OF PERSISTENT TREE DAMAGE ALONG THE  
TORNADO TRACK. THE START POINT IS BROUGHT BACK TO JUST SOUTH OF  
DAVIS LANE ALONG JACKSON CREEK WHERE MINOR TREE DAMAGE BECOMES  
EVIDENT. THE END POINT WAS ADJUSTED SOUTHEAST ACROSS INTERSTATE 10  
WHERE TREE DAMAGE BECAME APPARENT AGAIN IN THE VICINITY OF BOE  
ROAD AND HENLEY ROAD, IN LINE WITH THE LOCATION THAT THE RADAR TDS  
BEGAN TO DISSIPATE. NO ADDITIONAL DAMAGE IS VISIBLE SOUTHEAST OF  
THIS LOCATION. FURTHER REFINEMENTS OF THE TRACK ARE POSSIBLE LATER  
AS HIGHER RESOLUTION IMAGERY BECOMES AVAILABLE.

WITH A TORNADO DEBRIS SIGNATURE REVEALED A WEAK EF0 TORNADO  
OCCURRED NEAR THEODORE INDUSTRIAL PARK. MINOR TREE DAMAGE WAS  
EVIDENT, BEGINNING ALONG THE TREE LINE NORTH OF DEGUSSA ROAD.  
THIS IS WHERE THE FIRST SIGNS OF A RADAR TORNADO DEBRIS SIGNATURE  
APPEAR. THE TORNADO CROSSED RANGELINE ROAD, PRODUCING ANOTHER  
SMALL CORRIDOR OF TREE DAMAGE WEST OF DAUPHIN ISLAND PARKWAY  
ALONG CEDAR WOOD DRIVE NORTH. THE DAMAGE PATH COMES TO AN END AT  
DAUPHIN ISLAND PARKWAY AND SERVES AS THE END POINT FOR THIS  
TORNADO.
