PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BURLINGTON VT
1151 AM EDT MON SEP 21 2020

..HARD FREEZE AND FROST OVER PARTS OF THE NORTH COUNTRY

A HARD FREEZE AND FROST OCCURRED ACROSS PARTS OF NORTHERN NEW
YORK AND VERMONT THIS MORNING WITH LOW TEMPERATURES GETTING DOWN
INTO THE MID 20S TO LOWER 30S. AREAS THAT FELL INTO THIS
TEMPERATURE RANGE INCLUDE MOST OF NORTHERN NEW YORK AND VERMONT
WITH THE EXCEPTION OF GRAND ISLE COUNTY VERMONT AND AREAS ALONG
THE IMMEDIATE LAKE CHAMPLAIN SHORELINE.

THE FROST-FREEZE PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IS TO
WARN LOCAL GROWERS AND GARDENERS OF THE POTENTIAL FIRST DAMAGING
FROST OR FREEZE DURING THE FALL FOR A GIVE AREA PRIOR TO THE
AVERAGE FIRST FREEZE DATE. THIS ALLOWS PEOPLE TO TAKE
PREVENTATIVE MEASURES FOR PLANTS AND CROPS AGAINST COLD
TEMPERATURES CAUSING FROST AND OR FREEZE CONDITIONS.

THE PROGRAM ENDS AFTER THE FIRST HARD FREEZE OR FROST, JUST AS WE
EXPERIENCED EARLY THIS MORNING. THE PROGRAM MAY END AS WELL, IF
THE DATE OF THE AVERAGE FIRST FREEZE HAS BEEN SURPASSED DESPITE
NO FREEZE OCCURRING.

BASED ON LOW TEMPERATURES THIS MORNING, THE ONLY AREAS THAT MAY
STILL SEE FUTURE FROST OR FREEZE HEADLINES THIS FALL WILL BE GRAND
ISLE AND WESTERN CHITTENDEN COUNTIES OF VERMONT AND EASTERN ESSEX
COUNTY IN NEW YORK.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WILL CONTINUE TO INCLUDE FROST IN
THE FORECAST FOR AREAS NO LONGER RECEIVING HEADLINES FOR FROST AND
FREEZE CONDITIONS. IT IS RECOMMENDED TO FOCUS ON TEMPERATURE
FORECASTS THAT MIGHT HAVE AN IMPACT ON PLANTS AND VEGETATION
SENSITIVE TO COLD TEMPERATURES.
