AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORT WORTH TX
200 PM CST FRI JAN 10 2025

..NEW LONG TERM

KEY MESSAGES

- SLICK SPOTS WILL REMAIN ON SOME ROADWAYS THROUGH THE AFTERNOON,
EVEN THOUGH TEMPERATURES WILL WARM ABOVE FREEZING.

- THERE IS SOME LOW POTENTIAL FOR FREEZING FOG TO DEVELOP TONIGHT
ESPECIALLY IN AREAS WHERE SNOW REMAINS ON THE GROUND. FREEZING
FOG CAN RESULT IN ICE DEPOSITS ON ROADS AND BRIDGES.

- LOW TEMPERATURES WILL DROP INTO THE TEENS AND LOW 20S TONIGHT.
BLACK ICE WILL BE POSSIBLE IN AREAS WHERE ROADS REMAIN WET.

SHORT TERM

/ISSUED 1211 PM CST FRI JAN 10 2025/
/THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH SATURDAY/

THE PASSING UPPER LOW WILL CONTINUE TO SQUEEZE OUT A FEW SNOW
FLAKES ACROSS NORTH TEXAS THROUGH THE AFTERNOON. NO ADDITIONAL
SNOW OR ICE ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED, SO WE WILL LET THE WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY EXPIRE AT NOON. HOWEVER, WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEE
SOME SLICK SPOTS ON ROADS THROUGH THE AFTERNOON, ESPECIALLY ON
BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES WITH TEMPERATURES ONLY CREEPING ABOVE
FREEZING.

THE SKY WILL BEGIN TO CLEAR FROM WEST TO EAST THIS AFTERNOON WITH
A MOSTLY CLEAR SKY EXPECTED ACROSS ALL BE THE EASTERN ZONES
TONIGHT. RAPID RADIATIONAL COOLING WILL OCCUR THIS EVENING,
ESPECIALLY IN LOCATIONS THAT STILL HAVE SNOW ON THE GROUND (MUCH
OF NORTH TEXAS GENERALLY NORTH OF I-20). THIS WILL SEND
TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW FREEZING ACROSS THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA
WITH LOWS RANGING FROM THE TEENS TO THE MIDDLE 20S. THESE COLD
TEMPERATURES WILL ALLOW FOR FREEZING OF RESIDUAL LIQUID ON
ROADWAYS, RESULTING IN PATCHES OF ICE. THEREFORE, TRAVEL WILL
REMAIN HAZARDOUS TONIGHT, ESPECIALLY ACROSS THOSE LOCATIONS THAT
STILL HAVE SNOW ON THE GROUND. THESE ICY PATCHES WILL REMAIN ON
THE ROADS THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS SATURDAY UNTIL TEMPERATURES
WARM ABOVE FREEZING BY MIDDAY.

THERE IS SOME POTENTIAL FOR PATCHY FREEZING FOG OVERNIGHT, MAINLY
NORTH OF I-20 AND NEAR AND EAST OF I-35. HOWEVER, DRY AIR WILL
CONTINUE TO FILTER IN FROM THE NORTHWEST AND WEST OVERNIGHT WHICH
SHOULD LIMIT THE FREEZING FOG POTENTIAL FOR MOST. THEREFORE, WE HAVE
OPTED TO LEAVE THE MENTION OUT OF THE FORECAST FOR NOW. WE WILL
CONTINUE TO WATCH THE POTENTIAL FOR FREEZING FOG CLOSELY THROUGH
THE EVENING SINCE ITS FORMATION WOULD RESULT IN ADDITIONAL TRAVEL
IMPACTS.

LONG TERM

/NEW/
/SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/

MUCH QUIETER WEATHER IS EXPECTED THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEKEND
THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK WITH DRY, ZONAL FLOW ALOFT. TEMPERATURES
WILL REMAIN BELOW SEASONAL NORMALS THANKS TO THE ARRIVAL OF
ANOTHER COLD FRONT SATURDAY NIGHT/SUNDAY. THIS FRONT WILL COME
THROUGH DRY BUT WILL KEEP DAYTIME HIGHS SUNDAY AND MONDAY IN THE
40S AND LOWER 50S. OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL FALL TO OR BELOW FREEZING
WITH COLDEST TEMPERATURES NEAR THE RED RIVER.

TEMPERATURES WILL GRADUALLY INCREASE TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY WITH
WEAK RETURN FLOW AND A EVEN SUBTLE RIDGING ALOFT TOWARDS THE END
OF THE WEEK. HIGHS TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY WILL BE GENERALLY IN
THE 50S WITH LOWS FROM THE UPPER 20S TO THE MID 30S. HIGHS IN THE
60S WILL RETURN BY FRIDAY ALONG WITH A LOW CHANCE FOR WARM AIR
ADVECTION SHOWERS ACROSS THE EAST.

AVIATION

/ISSUED 1211 PM CST FRI JAN 10 2025/
/18Z TAFS/

CEILINGS/VISIBILITY WILL CONTINUE TO IMPROVE AT ALL TAF SITES
THROUGH THE AFTERNOON WITH MVFR CEILINGS SCATTERING OUT BY LATE
AFTERNOON AND CLEARING THIS EVENING. PATCHY FOG WILL BE POSSIBLE
OVERNIGHT/EARLY SATURDAY MORNING ACROSS THE METROPLEX TAF SITES,
WITH SNOW REMAINING ON THE GROUND HELPING TO SATURATE THE NEAR
SURFACE AIR. IF ANY FOG DOES DEVELOP IT WILL LEAVE A LIGHT GLAZE
SINCE TEMPERATURES WILL BE WELL BELOW FREEZING. FOR NOW WE HAVE
OPTED TO KEEP THE VISIBILITY 2 MILE OR BETTER EARLY SATURDAY
MORNING AND JUST MENTION MIST SINCE CONFIDENCE IN FREEZING FOG IS
LOW DUE TO THE ADVECTION OF DRY AIR FROM THE WEST/NORTHWEST
OVERNIGHT. ANY FREEZING FOG THAT DOES DEVELOP WILL QUICKLY
DISSIPATE ONCE THE SUN MAKES ITS VALIANT RETURN SATURDAY.

A NORTHWEST WIND WILL REMAIN IN THE 8 TO 13 KNOT RANGE THROUGH THE
EVENING, BECOMING LIGHT WEST/NORTHWEST OVERNIGHT AND SOUTHERLY
AFTER SUNRISE SATURDAY. WIND SPEEDS WILL REMAIN GENERALLY LESS
THAN 12 KNOTS ON SATURDAY.
