AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE GOODLAND KS
428 PM MST THU DEC 19 2024

KEY MESSAGES

- BRIEF COOL DOWN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY EAST OF HIGHWAY 25 WITH A
COLD FRONT, BUT STILL ONLY SLIGHTLY BELOW NORMAL.

- DRY CONDITIONS AND GENERALLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES
CONTINUE INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK.

PART OF NEXT WEEK.

SHORT TERM /THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/

ISSUED AT 140 PM MST THU DEC 19 2024

COLD FRONT LOCATED IN CENTRAL NEBRASKA THIS AFTERNOON WILL SLIDE
SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST ACROSS THE FORECAST AREA TONIGHT. GUSTY
NORTHWEST WINDS, UP TO 40 KTS IN EASTERN AREAS FROM MCCOOK TO
NORTON, WILL CONTINUE THROUGH ABOUT SUNSET BEFORE DIMINISHING.
LOW TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM THE MID TEENS IN EASTERN AREAS
TO THE LOWER 20S IN COLORADO. AN UPPER RIDGE OVER THE WESTERN
CONUS WILL PREVAIL FRIDAY AND SATURDAY WITH CONTINUED DRY
CONDITIONS. TEMPERATURES WILL MODERATE IN EASTERN AREAS WITH
HIGHS IN THE 30S ON FRIDAY AND UPPER 40S TO LOWER 50S ON
SATURDAY, WHILE WESTERN AREAS REMAIN MILD WITH HIGHS IN THE MID
TO UPPER 40S ON FRIDAY AND UPPER 50S/LOWER 60S ON SATURDAY. LOWS
WILL BE IN THE TEENS AND 20S.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/

ISSUED AT 140 PM MST THU DEC 19 2024

THE UPPER PATTERNS FLATTENS A BIT SUNDAY AND MONDAY AS A
SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVES THROUGH THE NORTHERN PLAINS. IT WILL BE
TOO FAR NORTH WITH DRY CONDITIONS CONTINUING. WILL SEE VERY MILD
CONDITIONS ON SUNDAY WITH A PREDOMINANTLY WESTERLY FLOW IN LOW
LEVELS AND TEMPERATURES WELL INTO THE 60S, COOLING SLIGHTLY INTO
THE 50S ON MONDAY BEHIND THE WEAK COLD FRONT ASSOCIATED WITH
THE SHORTWAVE. SHORTWAVE RIDGING THEN REBUILDS FOR TUESDAY AND
INTO PART OF WEDNESDAY WITH DRY AND MILD CONDITIONS. NEXT
SHORTWAVE ON TRACK TO MOVE INTO THE CENTRAL ROCKIES DURING THE
DAY WEDNESDAY AND INTO THE CENTRAL PLAINS WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND
THURSDAY. IT WILL BRING LOW CHANCES OF PRECIPITATION DURING
THAT TIME. TEMPERATURES ARE MILD ENOUGH SO THAT EITHER RAIN OR
SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE, LEANING MORE TOWARDS THE LATTER DURING
THE DAY AND THE FORMER AT NIGHT. ACCUMULATING SNOW, IF ANY, IS
BECOMING LESS FAVORABLE WITH THE LATEST MODEL RUNS, EVEN THE
ECMWF HAS LOWER AMOUNTS NOW, AND THE GFS SHOWING MOSTLY LIGHT
RAIN. SO IMPACTS MAY END UP BEING MORE OF THE NUISANCE VARIETY.
TEMPERATURES REMAIN ABOVE NORMAL THROUGH THE END OF THE PERIOD
WITH NO ARCTIC AIR IN SIGHT.

AVIATION /00Z TAFS THROUGH 00Z FRIDAY/

ISSUED AT 406 PM MST THU DEC 19 2024

VFR CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO PERSIST THROUGH PERIOD, BUT SOME
BRIEF PATCHY FOG MAY OCCUR NEAR THE KMCK TERMINAL AROUND
10-12Z. CONFIDENCE IN VERY LOW FOR THIS FOG TO FORM, BUT WE WILL
BE KEEPING A CLOSE EYE ON IT. THE STRONG WINDS WILL RAPIDLY
WEAKEN OVER THE THE FIRST COUPLE HOURS OF THE TAF PERIOD AND
BECOME FAIRLY LIGHT AND VARIABLE AROUND 6Z UNTIL AFTER SUNRISE.
SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL SLOWLY SPEED UP DURING THE DAY TOMORROW AND
A FEW GUSTS AROUND 20 KTS ARE POSSIBLE.
